Broome defeats strong field in Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud
Broome made all the running under Colin Keane and won his first Group 1, beating a solid group of rivals in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on Sunday at Saint-Cloud Racecourse.
In Swoop was the heavy favorite in the 1 1/2-mile Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, but made no real impact, failing to accelerate when the tempo quickened in upper stretch, making a brief bid, and then fading back to fourth in a flat performance.
Edaiyra got a sweet trip racing just behind the leader while saving ground around the turns, but she never seriously threatened Broome and won a head bob over outside-closing Gold Trip to get second.
Baron Samedi, the Belmont Gold Cup winner, pressed the leader from second but couldn’t match the top finishers’ kicks and wound up fifth, ending his winning streak at seven.
Aidan O’Brien, who sent St Mark’s Basilica to an impressive win Saturday in the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes in England, landed his first Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Broome, a 5-year-old by Australia out of Sweepstake, by Acclamation, was a good 2-year-old of 2018, had a decent if abbreviated 3-year-old campaign, raced just twice in 2020, but has come back with four wins and two starts during a very active campaign.
