Bromans send precocious pair in Shesastonecoldfox
Chester and Mary Broman are perennial leading owners and breeders in New York. They hold a strong hand in Monday’s $50,000 Shesastonecoldfox Stakes for statebred 2-year-old fillies at Finger Lakes, sending out two of the favorites in a short field in homebreds Spin a Yarn and Rush On By.
Spin a Yarn is by young New York sire Forty Tales, who stands at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds. Spin a Yarn is out of the winning Elusive Quality mare Satin Sheeks, who also raced as a homebred for the Bromans. Spin a Yarn won her Sept. 23 debut at Finger Lakes by 12 1/2 lengths, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 73, the top number in this field.
Rush On By won her debut by 13 lengths on Oct. 8 at Finger Lakes. The filly is by multiple Grade 1 winner Alpha, who stands for Darley at Sequel New York. Rush On By is out of the stakes-placed Harlan’s Holiday mare Hout Bay.
Both of the Broman fillies are trained by Christopher Progno, and both will be stretching out from the 5 1/2 furlongs of their debuts to six furlongs for the Shesastonecoltfox. Rush On By, who is 7-5 on the morning line, drew post 3 under Oscar Gomez, while Jaime Rodriguez is next door in post 3 with Spin a Yarn, who is 9-2.
Single Verse finished second to multiple stakes winner My Italian Rabbi in the Lady Finger Stakes on Sept. 9 at Finger Lakes while still a maiden for trainer Bruce Brown. She then came back for a 3 1/2-length win in a six-furlong maiden race at Belmont, posting a 72 Beyer. Dylan Davis has the mount on Single Verse, who is 9-5 on the morning line, from the outside post in the field of five.
Thea’s Theme, a Saratoga maiden winner at 6 1/2 furlongs, and Peripherique, a Finger Lakes maiden winner making her first start since that Aug. 12 debut, complete the field for the Shesastonecoldfox, which is slotted as the fourth race on a nine-race card.
