Broberg, Thornton win training, riding titles
Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La., closed out its meet Saturday night, with the leading trainer title going to Karl Broberg and the leading rider title to Timothy Thornton.
Broberg won 59 races from 170 starters for a 35 percent strike rate this meet at Evangeline. The stable’s starters had earnings of $761,440.
Thornton won 141 races from 555 starters for a 25 percent win rate. His mounts earned $1.9 million.
Broberg and Thornton will both head next to Delta Downs in Vinton, La.
** Van Berg, a 2-year-old filly by Morning Line, runs in Thursday night’s sixth race at Remington Park. Named for the late Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg, she started her career at Prairie Meadows and enters the maiden special weight off a third-place finish at the same level in Iowa. Kenny Smith trains Van Berg for her breeder, the Dream Walkin’ Farms operation of country artist Toby Keith. Keith has employed a number of trainers, including Van Berg, who died in December.
