Broberg, M and M Racing seek second stakes payday with Silver Moon Rising

M and M Racing and Karl Broberg have emerged as an owner-trainer team to watch. They had first stakes win together last week at Evangeline Downs and will be shooting for another this weekend at Lone Star Park.

Americium captured the $50,000 Opelousas last Friday at Evangeline, while Silver Moon Rising will start as one of the top contenders in the $100,000 fillies’ division of the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity on Sunday at Lone Star. Broberg joined the M and M Racing team of Mike and Mickala Sisk this year, picking up horses for Lone Star.

“They’ve been an absolute blessing,” Broberg said. “It gives us a shot to run better horses than what traditionally have come our way.”

Silver Moon Rising overcame trouble to win her debut in a maiden special weight May 12 at Lone Star. She was a $27,000 purchase during the Texas Thoroughbred Association’s auction of 2-year-olds in training in April. Silver Moon Rising is a daughter of Silver City and Solarfast, a full sister to six-time stakes winner Solar Charge.

“She showed so much potential from Day 1,” said Broberg of Silver Moon Rising.

Americium, a 4-year-old filly by Brilliant Speed, has won turf routes in her last two starts, the Opelousas and an optional $35,000 claiming race at Lone Star. She was a $30,000 claim by M and M Racing on June 1 at Lone Star, and Broberg said versatility was among her appeals.

“She just looked so consistent,” Broberg said. “It doesn’t seem to matter, by looking at her form, if it’s dirt or turf. There’s just very few of those mares out there in that price range that you’re able to find.” Broberg said Americium will now be readied for the Remington Park meet that opens in August.

The Sisks have been in racing since November 2016, and their primary trainer is Robertino Diodoro. The Texas residents won the Oaklawn Park owners’ title in April, and through Tuesday ranked second in the owners standings at Belmont Park.

Broberg sits atop the trainer standings in North America this year with 299 wins through Tuesday, according to Equibase.
