It’s the Swede figures to attract at least a plurality of bettors’ win money in the $60,000 Mamie Eisenhower Stakes on Friday night at Prairie Meadows, but her less obvious stablemate, Who’s Smokin, might also have a decent chance in the six-furlong sprint for Iowa-bred fillies. Karl Broberg trains both horses, and It’s the Swede figures to be favored after winning a statebred-restricted allowance race May 7 at Prairie Meadows by more than 15 lengths. But It’s the Swede shook loose through moderate fractions in her recent blowout, and on Friday, she’s drawn on the rail inside apparently serious pace pressure, but if It’s the Swede folds her tent in the homestretch, the Broberg-trained Who’s Smokin could rally to win. Who’s Smokin won her first two starts last summer and looked like she might be the leading Iowa-bred 2-year-old filly before she fell apart as the odds-on favorite in the Iowa Sorority in August. Out of action thereafter and turned over to Broberg, Who’s Smokin returned to the races April 29, broke from the rail in an allowance race and settled in behind horses on a sloppy track, coming home decently to finish second by a neck. The sense is of a filly who raced on raw juvenile talent at 2 and might have grown and matured into a more substantive racehorse at 3, a horse set to improve in her second start after a layoff. The speedy pair of Kera Kera and, even more so, Kims Star, figures to dog It’s the Swede from the start. If Who’s Smokin can’t muster a late challenge, perhaps Miss Lucky can. She finished 1 1/2 lengths behind Who’s Smokin last month and has been third or better in 14 of her 18 races at Prairie Meadows. :: Bet Prairie Meadows with DRF Bets.
