Broberg cautiously optimistic about Lone Star's Sunday card

Trainer Karl Broberg appears poised for a big afternoon Sunday at Lone Star Park.
But don’t tell him that.
“After the way last week went for me – we thought the stars were aligned for us and they weren’t – I’m not about to over-pump anything,” he said.
Broberg has horses entered in eight of the nine races on the card, and most will start as top contenders. They include Carlos Sixes and She’s Divine, the probable favorites in separate allowances that serve as the co-features.

Carlos Sixes will be looking for his fifth win on the year when he moves to turf for a first-level allowance for 3-year-olds and up. It goes as the sixth race. Carlos Sixes is moving to 1 1/16 miles off a pair of runner-up finishes in one-mile races at Lone Star.
“He doesn’t have a super-quick turn of foot, wants to go as far as possible,” said Broberg.
Broberg claimed Carlos Sixes in February with the intention of running him on the grass based on his form from Canada.
“This is unfortunately the first time the opportunity has presented itself,” Broberg said of a turf start. “Looking at what he’d done up there at Woodbine, it just seemed that the turf is where it’s going to be at for him.”
Carlos Sixes is 2 for 6 on the grass and put up one of his best Beyer Speed Figures on the surface, an 84. Ramon Vazquez has the mount from post 7 in Sunday’s field of 10.
She’s Divine goes in the eighth race, a first-level allowance for fillies and mares at a mile. She will break from post 2 under Vazquez.
“She’s got a lot of early foot and she will be showing her speed,” said Broberg.
Also set to start in the six-horse field is Cosmic Code, a half-sister to Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks winner Bonny South.
Belmont in the future
Broberg plans to move into some new territories with his stable for the balance of the year, he said Friday.
“I plan on several different venues,” he said. “I’m shaking things up in the last few months of the year.”
Broberg said he’s recently been in contact with racing officials at Belmont Park, Hawthorne, and Zia. He hopes to send about a dozen horses to New York. As for Hawthorne, it would be something of a home track for Broberg as he is a native of Chicago.
“I’m trying to get ahead of what’s going to be a very bright future for them after this year,” he said of Hawthorne, which is planning an expansion that will include sports betting and a casino.
Broberg also plans to add to his divisions at Canterbury and Prairie Meadows to “finish those meets stronger.” He has a large division at Lone Star Park, which ends Aug. 12.
Broberg’s stakes horses include Hunka Burning Love, the winner of the recent Lone Star Mile. He said the horse is under consideration for the Governor’s Cup on Aug. 21 at Remington Park.
