Broberg brings string to Kentucky
Karl Broberg, who leads all trainers in wins in North America in 2016, is branching out to Kentucky.
Broberg said he has some horses stabled at Churchill Downs for the first time. The group includes recent Remington Park winner Boom Bam Bing, one of the year’s winningest 3-year-olds. She is being pointed for the Grade 3, $100,000 Franklin County on Friday at Keeneland.
“We are up there with a few horses, just trying to put our toe in the water,” said Broberg, who has been a mainstay in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. “It’s time to expand our footprint. We also went into Canterbury for the first time, and that wound up being productive.”
Broberg had won 306 races this year through Sunday. The second-leading trainer in wins in North America is Steve Asmussen, with 242.
Boom Bam Bing, owned by Love Partnership Interests, has won six races this year, her latest being an allowance over older rivals in August at Remington.
“For a 3-year-old filly to have that many wins, it’s incredible,” said Broberg.
Boom Bam Bing has won six of her last seven starts.
“It’s uncanny – her ability to get up when she looks like she’s beat,” Broberg said.
A M Milky Way, a stakes-winning sprinter, also is part of Broberg’s string at Churchill. He was fourth to Ivan Fallunovalot in the $150,000 David M. Vance Sprint last month at Remington.
