British Columbia Derby boosted in value to $200,000
VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Thirty-eight stakes worth a total of $2.4 million have been scheduled for the 2015 Hastings meet that begins April 25.
The purse for the Grade 3, $200,000 British Columbia Derby was increased by $50,000. The 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds will be run Sept. 13 on the richest card of the year. Supporting the B.C. Derby are the $100,000 B.C. Oaks, the $50,000 S.W. Randall Plate for 3-year-olds and up, and the $50,000 Delta Colleen for fillies and mares.
The Randall and Delta Colleen serve as the final preps for the Grade 3, $100,000 Premiers for 3-year-olds and up and the Grade 3, $100,000 Ballerina for fillies and mares, which will be co-featured on Canadian Thanksgiving, Oct. 12. Also on the stakes-rich card are the $75,000 Ascot Graduation for 2-year-olds and the $75,000 Fantasy for juvenile fillies.
The B.C. Cup Classic for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles headlines six $50,000 stakes restricted to B.C.-breds on B.C. Cup Day, Aug. 3. The purse for the $50,000 B.C. Cup Classic was reduced by $25,000.
Last year, the $1,450,747 wagered on B.C. Cup Day accounted for the largest mutuel handle at the meet.
The richest races for 2-year-olds in Canada west of Ontario – the $100,000 Jack Diamond Futurity for colts and geldings and the $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity for fillies – will share top billing Sept. 20.
Hastings will open for training Feb. 5 without a racing secretary or assistant racing secretary.
“We are very close to having a racing secretary,” said Hastings general manager Darren MacDonald. “We found a strong candidate, and hopefully, we will be able to make an announcement in early February.”
