ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Kentucky-based Brindi will attempt to double up at Woodbine in Saturday’s $100,000 Ruling Angel, an open overnight stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Brindi is unbeaten when racing with Lasix for trainer Kelsey Danner. She made her first three starts this year over the Tapeta at Turfway Park, winning an allowance/optional claimer on Lasix in January before missing the board without it in both the Valdale and Serena’s Song stakes. When back on Lasix in the six-furlong Star Shoot Stakes here opening day on April 26, Brindi fought for the lead on a live rail under Sofia Vives before drawing clear to prevail over a track that was kind to speed. “The filly broke sharp,” Vives said. “Speed’s carrying, so you put her up there. She fought on at the quarter pole. I still had plenty of horse. She was just changing gears. I was really confident with her from the start. When someone like Kelsey ships in, be ready that they’re going to be pretty tough to beat.” Brindi is charting unknown territory traveling seven furlongs Saturday. She is part of a 10-horse field that has some other speed. With Lasix added, Aristella is making her first start since capturing the 1 1/16-mile Princess Elizabeth Stakes for Canadian-breds on Nov. 30, in which she left fellow Woodbine Oaks nominee and current rival Crystal Visions in her wake. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Aristella wintered at Payson Park in Florida with trainer Rachel Halden, who sent out the stakes-winning comebacker Roscar to finish second in a conditioned allowance/optional claimer last weekend. Crystal Visions got the winter off after finishing a troubled third in the Princess Elizabeth. “It was an outstanding effort,” trainer Stuart Simon said. “She was stuck behind a slow pace, in amongst horses, bumped around, and she continued to run on. Not too many horses continue to run on like she did. A clearer trip and she could have won that race.” Somethinabouther, based at Turfway with Brendan Walsh, took the Grade 3 Mazarine going 1 1/16 miles here last year over the upwardly mobile As Catch Can. In two outings at Turfway this year, Somethinabouther ran third in the Cincinnati Trophy Stakes and eighth in the Bourbonette Oaks. War Signal, a front-running miler trained by Mark Casse, is coming in fresh and could vie for the lead with Brindi. She dominated maidens on the stretch-out here Dec. 7 and then doubled up in a Jan. 5 allowance at Gulfstream Park. Madame Obey notched her debut in a six-furlong maiden special on closing day of the 2024 Woodbine meet. She has been idle since ending up third in a Feb. 13 allowance at Turfway. Rounding out the lineup are Star Shoot third-place finisher Social Code, Crystalaire, Hibiscus, and Shotgun Wedding. Post time for the nine-race card is 1:05 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
