Brickyard Ride has stakes options for next start

Benoit Photo Brickyard Ride wins the Kona Gold Stakes on April 30 at Santa Anita. He has won four races in a row, all stakes.

Brickyard Ride, unbeaten in four stakes this year, worked five furlongs in a rapid 59 seconds at Santa Anita on Friday for an undetermined race later this month.

Brickyard Ride had the fastest of 19 works at the distance.

Trainer Craig Lewis said on Friday that he is considering one of four stakes at Santa Anita for Brickyard Ride on Memorial Day weekend. Two races on May 28 – the $100,000 Thor’s Echo Stakes for statebreds at six furlongs and the $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes for statebreds at a mile on turf – are under consideration for Brickyard Ride, along with two races on May 29 - the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course, and the Grade 2 Triple Bend Stakes at seven furlongs.

“We’ve got a lot of time,” Lewis said of a potential decision. “The main thing is the horse is good.”

Friday’s workout was the second for Brickyard Ride this month after an easy win by 2 1/4 lengths in the Grade 3 Kona Gold Stakes at six furlongs on April 30.

“He looked as good as a horse can look,” Lewis said of the workout.

Earlier this year, Brickyard Ride won three consecutive stakes for statebreds – the California Cup Sprint at six furlongs in January, the Tiznow Stakes at a mile in February, and the Sensational Star Stakes at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in March.

Owned and bred by Sonny Pais, Brickyard Ride has won 12 of 22 starts and earned $970,977. The winning streak is the longest in the 5-year-old horse’s career.

“It’s difficult to win five in a row at any level,” Lewis said, looking forward to Brickyard Ride’s next start. “Sometime, he will get beat, but I hope it doesn’t happen.”
