ELMONT, N.Y. - Bricks and Mortar will make his next start, the final start of his career, in the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita next Saturday, trainer Chad Brown confirmed Saturday morning. Over the last few weeks, Brown had moved toward the Turf over the Mile despite the fact Bricks and Mortar has never run 1 ½ miles, the distance of the Turf. He is coming off consecutive Grade 1 victories at 1 1/4 miles in the Manhattan and Arlington Million. Concern over cutting him back to a mile as well as the way the horse has relaxed in his recent morning workouts were partly why Brown ultimately settled on the Turf. “Potentially, post position wouldn’t be quite as important at a mile and a half as a mile, and trip,” Brown said. “Those things matter, but it seems like they’re not as crucial as they are in a quick mile race. Additionally, after running in back-to-back mile-and-a-quarter races cutting him all the way back to a mile, I’m not sure that he’d have the explosiveness now that he would have had before I stretched him out.” Bricks and Mortar, who is 5 for 5 this year and a winner of 10 of 12 career starts, will be making his first start since the Arlington Million on Aug. 10. This will also be the final start of his career before he stands at stud next year in Japan. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2019: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, and more On Saturday at Belmont, Bricks and Mortar had his final workout, breezing a half-mile in 49.18 seconds over Belmont’s inner turf course. Bricks and Mortar worked outside of Without Parole, who is pre-entered in the Mile but who as of Saturday was still in need of one defection to get into the race. Brown said he only had Bricks and Mortar work a relatively easy half-mile because “he worked a little quick last week.” Bricks and Mortar and Without Parole were two of nine Brown-trained Breeders’ Cup pre-entrants - and 15 Breeders’ Cup horses overall - to put in workouts over three different surfaces at Belmont. Sistercharlie, the defending BC Filly and Mare Turf winner, worked five furlongs in 1:00.70, getting her last three furlongs in 35.53 seconds over the turf course. She worked in company with Thais, who will also run in the Filly and Mare Turf as a pacesetter for Sistercharlie, who has won six consecutive Grade 1 stakes. “She’s doing everything right and I loved her piece of work today,” Brown said of Sistercharlie. “She’s coming into the race exactly the way I want. Her Flower Bowl win wasn’t flashy, but I’m actually very pleased the way it worked out.” Uni, who was supplemented to the BC Mile for a $100,000 fee, worked a half-mile in 49.20 seconds on turf. She went in company with Digital Age, a 3-year-old graded stakes winner. The team went off a slow opening eighth in 14.10 seconds, went the quarter in 26.99 and finished in 22.21 seconds. “They went off a little slow,” Brown said. “We had the radios [to communicate with riders] and they picked it up from there. It looked like they flew home in hand.” Earlier in the morning, Brown worked four horses over the main track. Dunbar Road went five furlongs by herself in 1:01.20 in preparation for the Distaff. Wow Cat, second in last year’s Distaff, went five furlongs in 1:01.31 in company with an allowance horse, Proven Reserves. Wow Cat has sprung to life this fall, similar to last year when she finished second in the Distaff to Monomoy Girl and in front of Midnight Bisou, this year’s Distaff favorite. Most recently, Wow Cat was second to Midnight Bisou in the Grade 2 Beldame on Sept. 28. “She seems to have moved forward off that last race in the Beldame,” Brown said. “I think she’s rounding into form and has come around at the right time.” Structor (Juvenile Turf) and Selflessly (Juvenile Fillies Turf) both worked on the dirt. Structor went a half-mile in company in 49.40 seconds in company with Conglomerate, while Selflessly went a half-mile in 50.69 seconds in company with Moral Reasoning. Brown said the saddle slipped during Selflessly’s work, and the rider took a hold of her, which is why the work was slower than desired. Brown’s 10th BC pre-entrant, Princesa Caroline, was diagnosed with a temperature on Saturday morning and has been removed from consideration for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. All nine of Brown’s BC runners are scheduled to ship to California on Monday. In other Breeders’ Cup works: * Decorated Invader, among the favorites for the Juvenile Turf, worked a half-mile by himself in 49.31 seconds over the Belmont turf course. He went his opening quarter in 25.64 seconds and came home relatively in hand. “He had an aggressive work last week, very easy maintenance work today,” trainer Christophe Clement said. “I’m delighted. The horse looks well, he’s moving very willingly.” Clement will also send out Pure Sensation, but said all his workouts are completed. Both of Clement’s horses ship Monday. * Firenze Fire worked a sharper than usual half-mile in 48.05 seconds over the Belmont Park training track. Irad Ortiz Jr. was up for the work, during which Firenze Fire spotted a horse breezing ahead of him and wanted to catch him. He got his final quarter in 23.26 seconds and galloped out five furlongs in 1:00.95. “I tried to let that other horse go, but when he saw him in the stretch he just took off,” said Ortiz, who did grab a hold of Firenze Fire in the lane. Shekky Shebaz, who is trying to get into the Turf Sprint, galloped a mile in 1:57.41 over the training track. He got his final three furlongs in 39.70 seconds. Both horses, trained by Jason Servis, are scheduled to ship Monday. * Come Dancing, for the Filly and Mare Sprint, worked an easy three furlongs in 37.40 seconds over the training track. She was under stout restraint from Javier Castellano following a six-furlong workout in 1:10.19 last week. * Juvenile Turf candidate Our Country worked a half-mile in 48.66 seconds over the Belmont Park inner turf course. He got his final three furlongs in 23.10 seconds under John Velazquez, who will ride him in the Breeders’ Cup for trainer George Weaver. * Juvenile Turf Sprint candidate Another Miracle worked a swift three furlongs in 34.44 seconds in company with Speed Talks over the Belmont training track. * Crystalle (Juvenile Fillies Turf) had a strong gallop over the Belmont turf. Daily Racing Form caught her going from the half-mile pole to the wire in 55.12 seconds, with a final quarter in 25.96 seconds. She was not credited with an official workout.
