Breviary ($23.80) catches Malibu Beauty in final strides of Timonium Distaff
Breviary became a stakes winner Saturday when she overtook pacesetter Malibu Beauty in the late stages for a half-length victory in the $75,000 Timonium Distaff at Timonium.
Malibu Beauty held second, finishing 11 3/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Fool Yourself.
The Distaff was a 1 1/16-mile race run around three turns. It was scratched down to four horses from an original field of 10.
Breviary ($23.80) was content to let the pace go, settling along the rail in third and then fourth as Malibu Beauty ran the opening quarter in 24.34 seconds and was joined on the lead through a half-mile in 46.43 seconds. Breviary began her advance on the final turn as Malibu Beauty continued up front. The eventual winner overtook Malibu Beauty nearing the wire while covering the distance on a track rated fast in 1:45.88.
Jockey Grant Whitacre was aboard Breviary for her owner and trainer, Mario Serey Jr.
“The horse settled nice,” Whitacre said in a post-race interview broadcast by Timonium. “I got her comfortable, tipped her out on the backside and she made a nice run.”
Breviary is a daughter of Super Ninety Nine. She has now won 8 of 30 starts for earnings of $263,696.
