BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, September 20th by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore
Our Pick last week, Bay Finn, did us semi-proud, getting off slowly in a five furlong turf sprint and then splitting horses gamely toward the end to get up for second behind the 3-to-10 favorite to complete a chalky $8.40 exacta. Speaking of gimmick, of the 23 maiden winners and two stakes winners by BreezeFigs horses, 10 of the maiden winners and both stakes winners kicked off BreezeFigs gimmicks.
-
Both maiden winners at Arlington kicked off exactas: Bossy and Mi Fion paid $13.20 on the 12th; Sergios Pride and Be Nice Coach paid $49 the next day.
-
At Belmont on the 13th, Zandar and Sleeping Giant returned a $98 exacta and Night Prowler completed a $536 trifecta with them; the next day, Desert Image and Grandpa’s Princess scored a $35.60 exacta and $16.60 quinella while Sunnysammi completed a $92.50 trifecta.
-
At Churchill on the 13th Hero of Humor and Toasting Master combined for a $180 exacta.
-
At Charles Town on the 18th, Grab It and Growl and Attempt to Dream posted a $60.40 exacta payoff.
-
At Gulfstream on the 12th, Purple Smoke and Upheld posted a $16.20 exacta, while on the 13th Wildcat Magic and Prinzy’s Pride combined for a $12 exacta.
-
At Los Alamitos Racecourse on the 12th, one dollar gimmicks were paid on Gambler’s Roll combined with Unblunted in the exacta ($14.20), St. Joe Bay in the trifecta ($28.40), and True Image in the super ($21.70). The next day, Sharla Ray and Into Oblivion combined for a $9.40 exacta in the Debutante and the day after that Don’t Blame Me and Doctor Susan paid off in a $20.50 exacta while Wake Up Nick and Rowdy Dylan paid $5.40 in the Juvenile exacta.
-
Finally, at Parx on the 14th, the first six across the wire were BreezeFigs horses, with winner Don Lupe combining for a $20.40 exacta with El Guero Guantero, a $59 trifecta with Siralfredthegreat and a $6.01 ten-cent super with Mr. Coupons.
-
In addition, there were non-gimmick maiden winners at Belmont, Canterbury (2), Churchill, Emerald Downs, Golden Gate, Monmouth, Preque isle, and Zia. Out of breath? Look below for our Pick this week. Good luck!

Remember to pay attention to two changes we’ve made over the past several years. First, there have been changes in the CLASS EDGE category (at the bottom of the BreezeFigs card) because one sale was eliminated (OBSFEB) and FTFFEB is now in March (FTFMAR), and that moved OBSMAR into a higher class. Also, in the SALE & HIP column: the “HIP” refers to the catalogue number for that horse in that sale. This reference will enable you to go to the website of the sales company involved and easily find the short video of the horse’s breeze at that sale.
The web links for each sale are listed in the NOTES section of the new BreezeFigs Report and you will find all the information as to why we have done this and how you can benefit from this addition to the service by downloading the document which explains it all here: http://static.drf.com/PDFs/breezefigs/BreezeFigs2009Sales.pdf. Remember, no other handicapping service can give you the advantages you need from 2-year-old sales, So sign up for DRF-Plus on the front page of www.drf.com and get the BreezeFigs cards.
Our rules still hold about BreezeFigs “qualified” runners: You can get a good idea of what “qualified” BreezeFigs horses are by clicking on BreezeFigs Information underneath the two BreezeFigs links in the DRF-PLUS box in the right hand column on the www.drf.com home page and downloading files there. Remember, keep stride length (SL) in mind when handicapping from the BreezeFigs sheet and take advantage of all the tips that we provide on those sheets as well.
If you click here http://static.drf.com/PDFs/breezefigs/StrideLengthStudy-1.pdf you will get a document which details our latest study. The conclusion for those who like to know the bottom line fast is this: When it comes to 2-year-old racing only, horses that earned Group 1 or Group 2 BreezeFigs and had longer-than-average stride lengths at the five major 2-year-old sales of 2006-07-08-09 won more races, won earlier, and earned more black-type, than horses with shorter-than-average stride lengths, regardless of BreezeFigs Group. There’s a lot more to it than that, and a review of this document, which is the first in a series, will strengthen your hand at the windows, or, if you are a buyer, at the sales or claim box. So, download it and absorb. Also, refer to a study we did which shows that using BreezeFigs for 3-year-old maiden races in just as viable as using them for 2-year-old maiden races. Go to the DRF PLUS box on the www.drf.com home page, click on BreezeFigs™ Information, and then download “2006 Sales Study,” or just click right here: http://www1.drf.com/breezefigs/breezefigs_010507.doc.

Here’s Saturday’s Pick:
Belmont Park, 10th Race, Maiden Special Weight, 1 1/16 Miles (Tiurf)
On a card with multiple BreezeFigs horses in many races, we found a lone wolf to concentrate on: Combat Diver posted a seven-over-Par, Group 1 BreezeFigs profile at EASMAY with a 24.96 foot stride length, more than a foot and three-quarters longer than the average for colts that day at one furlong. Clever outfit behind him, he’s worth minimum a gimmick play and watch the board to see if there’s other noise. Good luck!
