Breezefigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, Sept. 27th by Bob Fierro and Jay Kilgore
Last week’s Pick, Combat Diver, did not appear to want to jump into action at any point in the race, but that doesn’t mean it was a total loss. There were three BreezeFigs maidens who won on that card, and one of them kicked off an exacta. In fact, there were 14 BreezeFigs maiden winners during the week, seven of whom kicked of BreezeFigs exactas and one who started a BreezeFigs trifecta. In addition, both stakes races at Belmont on Sunday were taken by BreezeFigs horses, and one of them resulted in a BreezeFigs exacta. Here’s the rundown in order of the day of the week:
At Los Alamitos on Friday the 19th, Cloudy River topped Slapshot Man for a $6.50 one dollar exacta.
Same day at Thistledown, Ariel Afleet & Laid Back Lady combined for a $27.60 exacta & Unbridled Courage finished off the trifecta: $67.20
Saturday at Churchill kicked off with Flat Deposit and Acquarossa combining for a $34.40 exacta.
Sunday at Belmont, Saratoga Heater and Bullheaded Boy combined for a $28.60 exacta in the Bongard Stakes (Tempermint Patty won the Gimma that day as well, no gimmick). At Gulfstream, Grand Jr. and Starship Danny hit $149.60 in their exacta. At Monmouth, Mr. Amos and Moonlight Party hit a $24 exacta.
On Monday at Zia Park, Pain and Misery beat Dirt Monster out for a parsimonious $4.40 payoff.
On Thursday, Oh Poggibonsi and Overthespeedlimit combined for a $50,50 exacta at Belmont while Sky Full of Stars beat out Rag’s Boy for a $38.60 payoff at Remington.
In addition, there were non-gimmick maiden winners at Gulfstream (2), Kentucky Downs, Los Alamitos, Monmouth, and Parx. Today’s card is loaded but we’ve got one that could pay off, see below. Good luck!
Remember to pay attention to two changes we’ve made over the past several years. First, there have been changes in the CLASS EDGE category (at the bottom of the BreezeFigs card) because one sale was eliminated (OBSFEB) and FTFFEB is now in March (FTFMAR), and that moved OBSMAR into a higher class. Also, in the SALE & HIP column: the “HIP” refers to the catalogue number for that horse in that sale. This reference will enable you to go to the website of the sales company involved and easily find the short video of the horse’s breeze at that sale.
The web links for each sale are listed in the NOTES section of the new BreezeFigs Report and you will find all the information as to why we have done this and how you can benefit from this addition to the service by downloading the document which explains it all here: http://static.drf.com/PDFs/breezefigs/BreezeFigs2009Sales.pdf. Remember, no other handicapping service can give you the advantages you need from 2-year-old sales, So sign up for DRF-Plus on the front page of www.drf.com and get the BreezeFigs cards.
Our rules still hold about BreezeFigs “qualified” runners: You can get a good idea of what “qualified” BreezeFigs horses are by clicking on BreezeFigs Information underneath the two BreezeFigs links in the DRF-PLUS box in the right hand column on the www.drf.com home page and downloading files there. Remember, keep stride length (SL) in mind when handicapping from the BreezeFigs sheet and take advantage of all the tips that we provide on those sheets as well.
If you click here http://static.drf.com/PDFs/breezefigs/StrideLengthStudy-1.pdf you will get a document which details our latest study. The conclusion for those who like to know the bottom line fast is this: When it comes to 2-year-old racing only, horses that earned Group 1 or Group 2 BreezeFigs and had longer-than-average stride lengths at the five major 2-year-old sales of 2006-07-08-09 won more races, won earlier, and earned more black-type, than horses with shorter-than-average stride lengths, regardless of BreezeFigs Group. There’s a lot more to it than that, and a review of this document, which is the first in a series, will strengthen your hand at the windows, or, if you are a buyer, at the sales or claim box. So, download it and absorb.
Also, refer to a study we did which shows that using BreezeFigs for 3-year-old maiden races in just as viable as using them for 2-year-old maiden races. Go to the DRF PLUS box on the www.drf.com home page, click on BreezeFigs™ Information, and then download “2006 Sales Study,” or just click right here: http://www1.drf.com/breezefigs/breezefigs_010507.doc.

Here’s Saturday’s Pick:
Gulfstream Park, 7th Race, Maiden Special Weight, 5 ½ Furlongs (Dirt)
Four first-time starter BreezeFigs fillies are in here, one of whom Devine Diva, should go off the favorite based on her connections and her OBSJUN profile which had her one-over-Par Group 2 with a 24.49 foot stride length—almost a foot and a half longer than average that day for fillies at a furlong. Look into My Eyes came out of the same sale with a one-under-Par Group 3 rating and a 23.26 foot SL at a quarter mile, and was not sold (RNA) at 35k. At the OBSAPR sale, Rovavevi showed promise with an even Par Group 2 profile that featured a slightly above average 22.70 foot SL. A month earlier at OBSMAR, Odachi threw in a four-under-Par Group 4 effort that saw her with a 22.66 foot SL, just under average that day for fillies at a furlong—and she RNA’d for 90k. This field looks like it actually might finish in the order mentioned above, with Divine Diva a standout in our book. Good luck!
