It’s never happened before but there’s always a chance it will with BreezeFigs first-time starter maidens. In our Pick last week we keyed second-choice Maurinho (whom we also played straight) with favored Instilled Regard and long shot Peace, with Alternate Rhythm, the only other BreezeFigs colt in the race given a gimmick shot. Well, the finish was Maurinho ($7.80) over Peace ($1 exacta $36.20), with Instilled Regard third (50-cent trifecta $45.80)—and Alternate Rhythm snuck up to complete a $619 superfecta. Sometimes good stuff happens, and we think this will be a key race to follow. There were 17 other BreezeFigs 2-year-old maidens who won last week, at: Belmont, Belterra, Churchill (two), Delaware, Gulfstream (three, including a BreezeFigs exacta), Gulfstream West (BreezeFigs exacta), Indiana, Laurel, Remington, Retama, Santa Anita (two others, both BreezeFigs exactas), Thistledown and Woodbine. Here’s Saturday’s Pick:
Keeneland, 3rd Race, Maiden Special Weight, 6 Furlongs (Dirt)
This race is loaded with potential stars, including all four BreezeFigs colts entered, one of which is on the AE list. Two of them, Conquistador (3-to-1) and Tricks to Doo (4-to-1), could be very special based on their profiles and other little things we know about them. A $2.45 million number at OBSAPR, Conquistador posted one of the highest BreezeFigs ever for a 16-over-Par Group 1 profile that featured a 26.25 foot stride length (SL), which was two-and-three-quarters feet longer than average that day at a furlongs (he’s a very big colt, and that helped). Tricks to Doo was almost as impressive at OBSMAR where he posted a seven-over-Par Group 1 ticket with a 24.38 foot SL, a half-foot longer than average for colts that day at a furlong. Rubus (7-to-2), who’s making his third start, posted an even-Par Group 1 profile at OBSAPR with a 24.12 foot SL, an eighth of a foot longer than average that day at a furlong. He has speed but is going to be challenged to last the distance if he’s pressured early. Pryor, who may not make it in, had a five-over-Par Group 1 profile at OBSMAR with a 24.78 foot SL, more than a foot-and-a-quarter longer than the average that day at an eighth. If he gets in, he’s worth a gimmick toss. But this race should come down to Conquistador and Tricks to Doo, with the latter at a possible advantage at this distance and the former capable of burying his rivals at any distance Saturday and in the future. Key them both. Good luck!
