We weren’t the only ones who liked our Pick Augie last week—the first timer was sent off the favorite and was claimed for $75k, but didn’t have the best of luck early and settled for third, beaten a length. Tab him back, of course. On the other hand, a dozen BreezeFigs 2-year-old maidens broke through to the Winner’s Circle last week, headed up by five at Gulfstream West where there was a BreezeFigs trifecta and a BreezeFigs exacta in the mix. The other winners came at Aqueduct (two), Del Mar (two), Parx, Penn National (BreezeFigs exacta) and Woodbine. Today we throw in a bonus at the track that has been sending out a steady stream of BreezeFigs winners this year, see below. Good luck!

Gulfstream Park West, 5th Race, Maiden Claiming ($12,500), 7 Furlongs (Dirt)

This is the bonus race. Definitely not a quality field by first timer Tavernier Gems looks almost too tempting at 15-to-1 based on his two appearances at Ocala where he racked up Group 1 performances, eight-over-Par both times: first at OBSAPR with a 25.41 foot stride length (SL), a foot-and-a-half longer than average, but was not sold (RNA) at 27k; then at OBSJUN with a 25.70 foot SL, a foot longer than average, where he was sold for a pittance (6k). He might need the seven furlongs here, and would seem to have a sneaky gimmick mate in Loveworshipspeace who has hit the gate twice in three starts but run well at this level in another following a six-over-Par Group 1 foray at OBSJUN where his 25.87 foot SL was more than four-fifths of a foot longer than average at a quarter mile. Ponder and perhaps pounce.

Gulfstream Park West, 7th Race, Maiden Special Weight, 5 1/2 Furlongs (Dirt)

This one has seven BreezeFigs maidens entered, five of which are making their debuts, three of which will have to contend with third-time starter Speedy Star. The latter posted an 11-over-Par Group 1 ticket at OBSAPR with a 23.91 foot SL, more than a foot longer than average for fillies that day. She woke up last out and may go off favorite here, but will have to compete on the board and on the track with first-timer R Happy Ending who posted a six-over-Par Group 1 ticket on a different day at OBSAPR with a 24.02 foot SL, about three-quarters of a foot longer than average that day. This could be a really nice filly. Congrats Golda comes out of OBSJUN with a three-over-Par Group 1 profile and a half-foot-longer-than-average 24.38 foot SL at a furlong; and at the same sale Body High posted a deceptively decent one-under-Par Group 3 profile with a foot longer-than-average 24.42 SL, but that was at a quarter mile. Tinca’s Bid, Athena’s Revenge and Prospective Diva have profiles that do not seem suitable to this class level, so we’d key R Happy Ending and Speedy Star with Congrats Golda and Body High as possible gimmick plays underneath them if the hoard looks right.
