BreezeFigs Quick-Pix Saturday, May 8, 2021 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore
Other than the fact that we probably need to upgrade our eyeglasses after identifying the horses in our Pick last week as colts, we had a heck of a Saturday when the fillies Quick Conversation and Crowding Out came home late to complete an exacta and trifecta—a couple of hours before Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby. The latter achievement was another BreezeFigs special (although we did not mention him in our column) as he scored the highest BreezeFigs profile of all the horses that breezed three furlongs at the sales last year. In addition, Du Jour won the American Turf on the Churchill card. Topping it off there were 11 BreezeFigs maiden 3-year-olds who won last week at: Belmont, Finger Lakes, Golden Gate, Gulfstream (BreezeFigs exacta), Indiana (two), Lone Star, Oaklawn, Pimlico, Prairie Meadows and Santa Anita. Despite few first-timers, we found a nice one on today’s card, see below. Stay safe and good luck!
If you’d like to learn a little more about how we come up with BreezeFigs, take a look at our new website by clicking here: www.biodatatrack.com and click on the tab BreezeFigs at the top of the page. In there you will find a link to a major study of how over 17,000 BreezeFigs horses from the sales 2007 through 2013 have succeeded on the racetrack based on Group and stride length. You can also access that study by clicking this link: www.biodatatrack.com/BreezeFigs-Study.pdf.
Here’s Saturday’s Pick:
Gulfstream Park, 4th Race, Maiden Special Weight, 7 ½ Furlongs (Turf)
Yes, we checked—these are colts who earned decent BreezeFigs profiles last year. We like the cleverly named Fifty Sheas Ofgrey who put up a one-over-Par Group 1 effort at OBSAPR with a 24.709 foot stride length (SL), more than three-fifths of a foot longer than average for colts that day at a furlong. But, he was scratched (SCR) from the sale before the auction began. He came back at EASMAY where his even-Par Group 2 ticket featured a just below average 24.36 SL—and he was once again scratched before the auction began. On the other hand, Chieficia was sold at OBSJUN following a two-over-Par Group 2 performance with a 23.40 foot SL which was a third of a foot below average that day for colts at a furlong. He’s shown little in two starts but the turf may help him. Despite questions of why he was scratched twice from sales after nice performances we’d key Fifty Sheas Ofgrey in this one and toss in Chieficia if the board says it’s worthwhile. Good luck!
