BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, May 27, 2017, by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore
As is often the case, 2-year-olds who should settle are often fried when sent to the lead too early, which was the case in our “key” Pick last week, Confidential, who flew early and struggled late to miss out on placing but completed a cheap $4.99 super in a five horse field at Gulfstream. However, the day was saved when our 3-year-old Pick, Red Flash, got up late on a muddy oval at Lone Star to pay eight bucks. He was one of eight BreezeFigs 3-year-old maidens to win last week, including two on the same day at Parx, two at Indiana (one BreezeFigs exacta), and solos at Arlington, Gulfstream and Presque Isle. Two babies won, at Indiana and Santa Anita—the latter, Saudi Chroma, who set tongues wagging. We’ll continue with our “one from Column A, one from Column B” menu Saturday with a couple of interesting events, see below. Good luck!
If you’d like to learn a little more about how we come up with BreezeFigs, take a look at our new website by clicking here: www.biodatatrack.com and click on the tab BreezeFigs at the top of the page. In there you will find a link to a major study of how over 17,000 BreezeFigs horses from the sales 2007 through 2013 have succeeded on the racetrack based on Group and stride length. You can also access that study by clicking this link: www.biodatatrack.com/BreezeFigs-Study.pdf.
Here are Saturday’s Pix:
3-year-olds:
Belmont Park, 2nd Race, Maiden Claiming (40k), 6 furlongs (Dirt):
Nile Gold is the only BreezeFigs filly here, and her OBSJUN profile is good enough to tab her—but her 20-to-1 morning line odds are a head scratcher. She was a six-over-Par Group 1 number with a 24.64 foot stride length (SL), which was more than three-quarters of a foot longer than average for fillies that day at a furlong. However, despite that and her toney pedigree she brought only $11k—which, considering her sire was a shock. She is a weak key selection here but needs to be considered.
2-year-olds:
Lone Star Park, 3rd Race, Maiden Special Weight, 4 ½ Furlongs (Dirt)
Janae, our Pick from a couple of weeks ago who ran a super race at 12-to-1 to finished second goes from the rail here at 9-to-5. However, this is an interesting race from the point of view that the other BreezeFigs filly in here, Flat Out Gittin It, comes out of the same sale, OBSMAR, and breezed on the same day, and is listed at 9-to-2. Whereas Janae posted a seven-over-Par Group 1 profile with a basically average 23.53 foot SL (and was scratched from the sale after breezing), Flat Out Getting It threw in a one-over-Par Group 2 ticket with a 22.82 foot SL, more than half-a-foot shorter than average, and was sold for only seven grand. This looks like a Janae key with a decent shot for a BreezeFigs exacta—but you might want to toss a saver in on the other filly because Janae will be forced to scoot early because of her post. Good luck!
