BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, May 14th, 2016 by Bob Fierro and Jay Kilgore
Not a bad week for BreezeFigs runners at all: Nyquist (he of the 25.40 foot stride length) wins the Kentucky Derby (G1), our Pick of the week on the same card results in a BreezeFigs exacta of $21, and two of the five 2-year-old BreezeFigs starters during the week won. The latter brought the tally so far to five BreezeFigs 2-year-old winners out of the first 11 starters. In addition, three other BreezeFigs 3-year-olds won stakes on Derby Day—King Kranz, Sharp Azteca and Miss Inclusive. Five others broke their maidens besides Jazzy Time in the BreezeFigs exacta—two at Woodbine, one each at Finger Lakes, Gulfstream and Laurel. There are no 2-year-olds on today’s cards, but we found a good 3-year-old race, see below. Good luck!
If you’d like to learn a little more about how we come up with BreezeFigs, take a look at our new website by clicking here: www.biodatatrack.com and click on the tab BreezeFigs at the top of the page. In there you will find a link to a major study of how over 17,000 BreezeFigs horses from the sales 2007 through 2013 have succeeded on the racetrack based on Group and stride length. You can also access that study by clicking this link: www.biodatatrack.com/BreezeFigs-Study.pdf.
Here’s Saturday’s Pick:
Santa Anita, 1st Race, Maiden Special Weight, 6 ½ Furlongs (Downhill Turf)
Airlite had a bit of a strange BreezeFigs history last year. He came out in the first sale of the year at BARMAR and posted a five-over-Par Group 1 profile with a 25.45 foot stride length (SL), which was more than three-quarters-of-a-foot longer than average for colts that day at a furlong on the dirt. He was not sold (RNA) for 300k, and then was sent to OBSAPR where he hit synthetic—and obviously hated it. There he and posted a three-under-Par Group 4 profile with a 23.42 foot SL, more than a third-of-a-foot below average for colts that day at a quarter mile—and he was once again RNA’d, this time for 240k. At the same sale Lauren’s Ladd posted a four-over-Par Group 1 profile with a 24.87 foot SL, which was 1.37 feet longer than average for colts that day at one furlong. He’s run twice and will be favored based on his second start, on the weeds, which was very decent. We think Airlite has a decent upset chance here because of his connections, but he certainly should be considered a gimmick play if you’re going to go with the obvious in Lauren’s Ladd. Good luck!
