BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, March 18, 2017 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore
It was an eventful race but only Wanztbwicked managed to salvage any of our handicapping pride with a second-place finish to complete a $52 exacta and $22 quinella in our Pick. During a week that many pricey 2-year-olds who will appear on our cards starting in April were selling at OBSMAR, 11 of those BreezeFigs horses that sold at various venues last year broke their maidens. Five came home on top at Gulfstream (including a BreezeFigs exacta). The others came at Aqueduct, Laurel (two), Oaklawn, Sam Houston and Tampa Bay (a BreezeFigs exacta). Saturday's card is subject to weather machinations once again, so we have to stick with the southern circuit (which has been unseasonably cold) for our Pick this week, see below. Good luck!
If you’d like to learn a little more about how we come up with BreezeFigs, take a look at our new website by clicking here: www.biodatatrack.com and click on the tab BreezeFigs at the top of the page. In there you will find a link to a major study of how over 17,000 BreezeFigs horses from the sales 2007 through 2013 have succeeded on the racetrack based on Group and stride length. You can also access that study by clicking this link: www.biodatatrack.com/BreezeFigs-Study.pdf.
Here’s Saturday’s Pick:
Gulfstream Park, 10th Race, Maiden Special Weight, 6 Furlongs (Dirt)
Tolstoy heads the BreezeFigs contingent in here, and this first-timer is actually listed as the 5-to-2 favorite in the morning line. And, why not? He’s by Uncle Mo, comes from a serious bunch of connections, and plowed through his breeze at OBSMAR with a six-over-Par Group 2 ticket that was anchored by a 25.92 foot stride length (SL), almost two feet longer than average that day for colts at a furlong. The other first-time BreezeFigs runners aren’t likely to be in his class. Burgameister spun a two-under-Par Group 3 number at OBSMAR with a 23.79 foot SL, a quarter foot below average that day, and was not sold (RNA) for $190k. He was brought back at OBSJUN where he went a quarter mile and posted a four-under-Par Group 3 number with a 23.36 foot SL, almost three quarters of a foot shorter than average, and was sold for $135k—go figure. King Power posted a quarter mile three-under-Par Group 4 ticket at OBSMAR with a 24.50 foot SL, which was just a tad below average that day. Mr. Vargas is making his second start with a two-under-Par Group 3 profile at EASMAY where he had a nice 25.35 foot SL, about a foot longer than average for colts that day at a furlong—and was promptly scratched (SCR) from the sale. He did not do poorly in his debut and at 10-to-1 might be worth a gimmick shot with Tolstoy. Good luck!
