BreezeFigs Quick-Pix Saturday, January 8, 2022 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore
It was a nice, if unusual, start of the year for BreezeFigs maidens—nice that both of our Pix hit the board, unusual because both parts of the entry at Aqueduct made up all the gimmicks and very nice that our Santa Anita special, Queen of Thorns, blew the field away in a stunning performance that franked her 4-to-5 odds. There were eight other maiden winners during the week at Aqueduct, Gulfstream (two), Santa Anita (three others) and Tampa Bay (two), plus a lot of black type earned by logical horses. Today’s is somewhat light on first timers, but there is one race which will drive everyone a bit crazy, see below. Good luck and stay safe..
Here’s Saturday’s Pick:
Gulfstream Park, 4th Race, Maiden Special Weight, 6 Furlongs (Dirt)
Very unusual that all five BreezeFigs colts are first-timers, but even more so because each of them has a good chance of getting into the fray early or late. We’re most inclined to key one of them, Carronade, and work our way through the tote board flashes to see which others might be gimmick worthy. Carronade comes out of OBSAPR with a five-over-Par Group 1 profile that featured a 25.65 foot stride length (SL) at a quarter mile, more than a foot and a quarter longer than average for colts that day at the distance. Iron Works also breezed at that sale but on a different day and distance, chalking up a one-over-Par Group 2 ticket with a 24.82 foot SL, three-fifths of a foot longer than average for colts that day at a furlong. Ciango swept to a seven-over-Par Group 1 rating at OBSMAR with a 24.86 foot SL, which was a foot and a quarter longer than average for colts at a furlong that day. Both Anthracite and Master of Arms did their things at OBSJUN where Anthracite tossed in a five-over-Par Group 1 profile with a 24.32 foot SL that was a quarter foot longer than average at a furlong that day; on a separate day Master of Arms chalked up an even-Par Group 2 ticket with a 24.35 foot SL, average that day at a furlong. Based on all things considered in our profiles, we’re be more inclined to include Iron Works and Ciango on our tickets with Carronade. Good luck!
