BreezeFigs Quick-Pix, Saturday, December 18th

If you paid close attention to our Pick at Philadelphia last week, you may have scored out-our hot shot in the first race (Smooth Glider) was scratched, but the two remaining BreezeFigs horses, Rings Island and Key to Brooklyn, ran one-two for a modest $10.60 exacta. But buried in that pick was our sneaky look at the fifth race and that horse, Timber Trouble, came through with a $16.60 payoff. Unfortunately, Tropical Rush, our pick at Sam Houston tired after setting the pace in the mud to finish third, but it was still a reasonably good day. This week's card is filled with "what's the weather" questions, so we are trying to stay as dry as we can with a look at Hollywood Park, where an overall intriguing card is scheduled. We're not sure of next week's schedule, so it we're not on the website on Christmas Day or the day after, have a Merry Merry! Good luck!

Before we get to the business of Pix, we remember we've changed our format for the 2-year-old sheet. There are two BreezeFigs sheets for each date, one for the 3-year-olds from the 2008 sales (to be posted through June 30th), and one for the 2-year-olds from the 2009 sales. The 2009 sales sheet has a major addition in the SALE column: It's now labeled SALE & HIP, the "HIP" referring to the catalogue number for that horse in that sale. This reference will enable you to go to the website of the sales company involved and easily find the short video of the horse's breeze at that sale.

Our rules still hold about BreezeFigs "qualified" runners: You can get a good idea of what "qualified" BreezeFigs horses are by clicking on BreezeFigs Information underneath the two BreezeFigs links in the DRF-PLUS box in the right hand column on the home page and downloading files there. Remember, keep stride length (SL) in mind when handicapping from the BreezeFigs sheet and take advantage of all the tips that we provide on those sheets as well.

The conclusion for those who like to know the bottom line fast is this: When it comes to 2-year-old racing only, horses that earned Group 1 or Group 2 BreezeFigs and had longer-than-average stride lengths at the five major 2-year-old sales of 2006-07-08, won more races, won earlier, and earned more black-type, than horses with shorter-than-average stride lengths, regardless of BreezeFigs Group. There's a lot more to it than that, and a review of this document, which is the first in a series, will strengthen your hand at the windows, or, if you are a buyer, at the sales or claim box. Hollywood Park, , Maiden Special Weight, 6 Furlongs (Synthetic)

Four BreezeFigs entries here, with one of them likely to go off favorite-and deservedly so. Exfusion comes out of a key maiden in his debut where his KEEAPR Group 2 profile was no fluke-the winner, Domonation, is in the fourth race on the card which is a stakes, and the runner-up, Quiet Invader, is favored in the second race, the other half of this maiden, and both of them are solid Group 2 BreezeFigs horses. Exfusion was bought back (RNA) for 140k at the sale after posting an eight-over-Par profile with a 25.45 foot SL-hello, that's 1.5 feet above average for that sale. First-timer Dontsellmetofelons, another RNA (at 60k) but this one out of BARMAR could give the top pick some trouble-he had a very similar SL (but on the dirt), and his Group 1, three-over-Par profile at that sale was quite good. Fyvio showed decent form at OBSAPR where he, too, failed to meet his reserve at 28k, popping up with a one-over-Par Group 2 performance that featured a solid 24.77 foot SL, like Dontsellmetofellons, almost a foot above average. But he got off badly in his debut and has to show more to be anything better than a gimmick player. The firster they will be betting here because of his connections and price is Clutch Player, who did OK but not spectacularly so at EASMAY on the dirt where he was a Group 3, two-under-Par performer with a 23.3 foot SL, just a quarter foot above average for that day. He might clunk up in the gimmick as well, but the two top Pix here look like they might be the ones. Good luck!
