BreezeFigs Quick-Pix Saturday, August 14, 2021 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore
That was a close call—in the paddock, we mean, where Dripping Gold, our Pick last week, created some potentially serious havoc but with the help of savvy and experienced horse people and still got saddled up. Then he was bumped by our gimmick Pick, Morning Thoughts, at the start but then buried him in a speed duel and drew off in a special performance and paid $14.60—about eight bucks more than we expected. He was one of eight BreezeFigs juveniles to break their maidens last week all over the place including another one at Saratoga plus BreezeFigs trifectas at Colonial and Del Mar, solos at Evangeline and Gulfstream, and two at Monmouth. The 3-year-olds almost kept pace with a half dozen of them breaking their maidens at Arlington, Colonial, Del Mar, Louisiana Downs, Penn National (BreezeFigs exacta) and Prairie Meadows. There were also a bunch of stakes winners on both cards, many of them early in their careers, so it pays to keep good records. Today’s we have a 2-year-old card which features not a single first-time starter whom we can recommend, and we are not sure that has every happened in August in our 15 years on the tab. However, we found a very neat play on the 3-year-old card, see below. Stay safe and good luck!
If you’d like to learn a little more about how we come up with BreezeFigs, take a look at our new website by clicking here: www.biodatatrack.com and click on the tab BreezeFigs at the top of the page. In there you will find a link to a major study of how over 17,000 BreezeFigs horses from the sales 2007 through 2013 have succeeded on the racetrack based on Group and stride length. You can also access that study by clicking this link: www.biodatatrack.com/BreezeFigs-Study.pdf.
Here’s Saturday’s Pick:
3-Year-Olds:
Saratoga, 1st Race, Maiden Special Weight, 5 ½ Furlongs (Turf)
Our Pick a couple of weeks ago, War Smoke, comes back here after a smashing second in his debut but even though he is 9-to-5 in the morning line he will be facing a tough first-timer in Suit of Armor. The latter posted a five-over-Par Group 1 ticket at OBSAPR last year with a 25.75 foot stride length (SL), which was a foot-and-a-half longer than average for colts that day at a furlong. That contrasts to War Smoke’s even-Par Group 1 at EASMAY where his 24.55 foot SL was about average for colts that day at a furlong and good enough to get him in the picture a couple of weeks ago. This looks like a solid box and key play. Good luck!
