Breeders' Cup supplements at $8M in '06

The Breeders' Cup will provide $8 million in purse supplements this year to 135 stakes races in North America, an increase of 10 stakes races over last year, the organization announced on Thursday.

Last year, Breeders' Cup distributed $7,305,000 in supplements, available only to Breeders' Cup-nominated horses running in the race. Under the system, Breeders' Cup provides supplements ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 for each race.

This year, Breeders' Cup is providing supplements to 27 races that did not have purse enhancements last year. Meanwhile, 17 stakes races that carried those supplements in 2005 will not have them this year, according to Jim Gluckson, a spokesman for the organization.
