Gstaad, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar last October, will be an odds-on favorite to win his first Group 1 in Europe in Saturday’s $580,600 Irish 2000 Guineas at a mile for 3-year-olds at The Curragh. Gstaad, a colt by Starspangledbanner, has won 3 of 7 starts, with all the losses in Group 1 races. In his first start this year, Gstaad was second by 2 3/4 lengths to Bow Echo in the Group 1 English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse in Great Britain on May 2. Last summer and early fall, Gstaad was second in three consecutive Group 1 races – by a short neck in the Prix Morny at Deauville Racecourse in France, by a head in the National Stakes at the Curragh, and by three-quarters of a length in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! He is scheduled to have his next start in the Group 1 St. James’s Palace Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile at Royal Ascot on June 16. Gstaad races for the Coolmore syndicate and trainer Aidan O’Brien, who has won the Irish 2000 Guineas a record 12 times. Gstaad will be ridden by Ryan Moore, who is expected to have the colt in a stalking position. The runners with the best chance to beat Gstaad on Saturday are Distant Storm and Alperslan, two shippers from Britain. Distant Storm, trained by Charlie Appleby, was third in the Dewhurst last October and third by 11 lengths in the English 2000 Guineas. Alperslan, trained by Karl Burke, has won 3 of 4 starts. Alperslan was sixth of nine in the Dewhurst in his final start last year, and won his 2026 debut in the Grade 3 Greenham Stakes at seven furlongs at Newbury Racecourse in Britain on April 18 by leading throughout.
