Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf: Sunday preps to help sort field

There are six Win and You’re In races leading up to the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita, and the first three winners are not going to take advantage of the fees-paid berth that goes with winning.

After Berkshire won the Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket last Saturday, his trainer Paul Cole said he probably wouldn’t run again until next year.

The connections of Australia, who won the ICON Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Leopardstown on Sept. 7, said he also is being pointed to classic races in Great Britain next year. The Mark Casse-trained filly My Conquistadory won the Summer Stakes on Sept 14, and she isn’t eligible because the Juvenile Turf is restricted to males.

This Sunday, there are three Win and You’re In races, beginning in France with the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp. The Grade 3, $200,000 Pilgrim at Belmont Park and the Grade 3, $150,000 Bourbon at Keeneland will help identify some of the serious contenders in North America. Also on Sunday, the $100,000 Zuma Beach at Santa Anita will serve as the final major prep for 2-year-old colts and geldings based on the West Coast.
