Breeders' Cup Juvenile future wagers open Friday
Instagrand, the recent winner of the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar, has been made the 4-1 morning-line favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Future Pool, which will open on Friday and close on Sunday evening, according to Breeders’ Cup.
The Juvenile pool is one of two future bets that Breeders’ Cup is offering this weekend, along with a pool asking bettors to pick the sire of the Juvenile winner. Both pools include 23 individual betting interests and a field entry. The Juvenile, which is restricted to 14 runners, is scheduled for Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on the Friday of the two-day event.
Instagrand is followed on the morning-line by Roadster, a recent maiden winner at Del Mar, at 6-1. Call Paul, the winner of the Saratoga Special earlier this summer, and Mucho, a maiden winner at Saratoga on Aug. 4, are both listed at 8-1. The field is listed at 30-1.
The morning-line favorite in the Juvenile Sire pool is the field entry at 4-1. Quality Road, the sire of Roadster, is listed next at 5-1, while Tapit, the sire of three runners listed in the Juvenile pool, was made 8-1.
The minimum bet in both pools is $2, with win only wagering. Takeout is 17.5 percent, the takeout rate for straight bets at Churchill Downs.
Breeders’ Cup offered future bets on both the Classic and the Distaff last weekend. As expected, Accelerate, the runaway winner of the Pacific Classic, closed as the favorite in the Classic pool at 3-1, while Monomoy Girl, the clear leader of the 3-year-old filly division, closed as the 3-1 favorite in the Distaff pool.
The Classic pool drew $86,670 in bets, while the Distaff attracted $17,733 in wagers.
Breeders’ Cup will again offer a Classic pool over the weekend of Oct. 5-7, but that wager is for the time being planned for 15 individual entries and a field bet, though those plans could change. Breeders’ Cup will also offer a future bet on the Turf on that weekend.
Breeders’ Cup last offered future bets in 2002-2003, when it offered pools on all seven races that made up the event at that time. Handle in all seven pools in 2002 was approximately $530,000, while handle in the seven pools offered in 2003 was approximately $555,000.
