Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: Stakes winners Corsia Veloce, Meringue out

Julie Wright Corsia Veloce, winner of the Grade 1 Natalma, will miss the remainder of the season according to trainer Josie Carroll.

Corsia Veloce, the undefeated winner of the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes at Woodbine earlier this month, and Meringue, who won the $996,000 Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies Stakes on Aug. 31, will not start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Oct. 31.

Corsia Veloce, an Ontario-bred filly by Practical Joke, earned a fees-paid berth to the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf with her win at 12-1 in the Natalma Stakes at a mile on turf on Sept. 13. Corsia Veloce had one workout following the Natalma, a half-mile breeze on Sept. 24.

“Unfortunately, she is out for the season,” trainer Josie Carroll wrote in a text message on Monday.

Carroll did not return a phone call seeking further comment.

Owned by Glenn Sikura and Mario Serrani, Corsia Veloce is unbeaten in three starts, including the Catch a Glimpse Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs on turf at Woodbine on Aug. 16. She has earned $378,117.

Meringue emerged from a workout at Keeneland on Sept. 20 with an injury, trainer Rodolphe Brisset said on Monday.

“She’ll need some time off,” Brisset said. “More than likely, no surgery will be needed.”

Owned by Elements Racing, Meringue has won 2 of 3 starts and earned $691,060. By Frosted, Meringue was second in the Grade 3 Adirondack Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt at Saratoga on Aug. 3, finishing 3 1/4 lengths behind Mythical.

“We think highly of her,” Brisset said. “She can run on both surfaces.”

In the lucrative Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf at a mile, Meringue closed from ninth of 10 to win by a head at 5-1. She won a maiden race at five furlongs on turf at Churchill Downs in her first start in June.
