Recent history favors the undefeated Final Accord, who will race at a mile for the first time in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Oct. 31. In the 17 runnings of the race, two winners have been tried at a mile for the first time and won the Juvenile Fillies Turf – Meditate at Keeneland in 2022 and Lake Victoria at Del Mar last year. They were trained by Aidan O’Brien of Ireland. Final Accord could be the first North American-based filly to try a mile for the first time in the Juvenile Fillies Turf and win. She may be joined in that regard by Royal Testament, who was second in the Matron. Trainer George Weaver said earlier this week he is eager to start Royal Testament in the Breeders’ Cup. Four European candidates – Balantina, Coming Attraction, Royal Fixation, and Yaupon de Replay – have yet to start at a mile. :: BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES TURF: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more Final Accord is trained by Mark Casse, who won the 2015 BC Juvenile Fillies Turf with Catch a Glimpse. Casse believes Final Accord will be suited to a mile. “I think she’ll run very well,” Casse said. “I think she’ll like the added ground.” Owned by Gary Barber and Peter Deutsch, Final Accord has started twice, winning a maiden race at five furlongs on turf at Woodbine on Sept. 11 and the Grade 3 Matron Stakes at six furlongs on turf at Aqueduct on Oct. 2. In both races, she closed from slightly off the pace. Casse said the Matron was chosen for Final Accord’s first start in a stakes because of its distance. “She was coming off a win at five furlongs, and I thought the Matron would be a nice next step,” he said. The $1 million BC Juvenile Turf Sprint at five furlongs on Oct. 31 is not under consideration for Final Accord. “Five-eighths is too short,” Casse said. The Juvenile Fillies Turf is expected to draw a full field of 14. The list of probable runners has changed in the last week. O’Brien said Sunday that True Love, winner of the Grade 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at six furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse in Britain on Sept. 27, is more likely for the Juvenile Turf Sprint. The O’Brien-trained Precise, winner of the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on Oct. 10, will next race in 2026, he told the press that day. The list of pre-entries will be finalized on Monday and announced on Oct. 22. Time to Dream, who won the P.G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 27 but finished a troubled third in the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 3, is the leading domestic contender. The European runners are expected to include Pacific Mission, a close second in the Group 2 May Hill Stakes for fillies at a mile at Doncaster Racecourse in Britain on Sept. 11, and Royal Fixation, who was third in the Cheveley Park Stakes. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
