Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Crazy Hot Mess will not run
:quality(75))
Trainer Ray Bryner said Monday that Crazy Hot Mess, the runner-up in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, will not run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Bryner, who also co-owns the filly, brought her back to Kentucky last month to begin training for the race, but a “hiccup” in her recent preparation has stopped that progress.
“We’re going to try to find another spot for her a little down the line, but we’re not running her in the Breeders’ Cup,” Bryner said.

Trained by Peter Miller in her first three starts, Crazy Hot Mess earned her maiden victory at Ellis Park in July before shipping to the West Coast. She finished third in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar before finishing a distant second in the Del Mar Debutante behind Miss Monica, who is expected to be a serious contender in the Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland.
Instead of targeting the Grade 2 Oak Leaf at Santa Anita earlier this month, Bryner decided to bring the filly back to his stable at Churchill Downs in order to give her more time to train up to the Breeders’ Cup. She most recently breezed four furlongs in 48.60 seconds on Oct. 17, and Bryner said he was planning on targeting the Juvenile Fillies as recently as last week.
Miss Monica, who also skipped the Oak Leaf to move to Kentucky for Bob Baffert, was still at Churchill on Monday morning, when she zipped through five furlongs in 59.40.
Meanwhile, Emphatic, the Grade 1 Alcibiades winner and likely favorite in this year’s Juvenile Fillies, completed her first workout at Keeneland for Brendan Walsh on Oct. 16, breezing four furlongs in 48.80.
