DEL MAR, Calif.– Jockey Rossa Ryan had a high standard to match this year after a 2024 season that included wins aboard Bluestocking in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris and Starlust in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar. Ryan, who stands 5 feet 8 inches, won 201 races in Britain alone in 2024, the second consecutive year he surpassed the 200-win milestone. This year, Ryan has 152 wins in Britain, and still has time for a major international victory. On Saturday at Del Mar, Ryan, 25, has two mounts on the Breeders’ Cup program – Amiloc in the $5 million Turf and Qirat in the $2 million Mile. A win by one of them would be the highlight of Ryan’s year, especially when compared to the fall of 2024. “Last year was such an incredible year,” Ryan said in the Del Mar stable area on Wednesday. “Things were going our way fully through the year. “It’s never going to be like last year, winning an Arc and a Breeders’ Cup. I had to readjust myself and readjust what’s going on.” ON SALE NOW: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages! Get everything you need to win and save big. Amiloc and Qirat are trained by Ralph Beckett, who also trained Bluestocking and Starlust, both retired. Amiloc is an interesting prospect in the 1 1/2-mile BC Turf. A 3-year-old British-bred gelding, Amiloc won his first five starts before he finished second by four lengths in a highly regarded running of the Group 1 Irish St. Leger at 1 3/4 miles at the Curragh in Ireland on Sept. 14. Al Qareem, who finished third, won his fourth stakes of 2025 in the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot on Oct. 3. Race winner Al Riffa has been sent to Australia where he rates among the top three in the future-book for Tuesday’s Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse. Amiloc, owned by David and Vimy Aykroyd, recorded his biggest win to date in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes for 3-year-olds at Royal Ascot in June. The success has been something of a surprise, Ryan said. Amiloc was not a flashy worker before his career began. He won his first two starts in minor races on the all-weather track at Kempton Racecourse in the summer of 2024. “He was under the radar,” Ryan said. “He doesn’t show a lot in the mornings. “He’s been a slow progressive horse. Some of those horses under the radar end up being the best.” Qirat has a tough draw in post 13 in the BC Mile. He won the Group 1 Sussex Stakes in a 150-1 upset at Goodwood Racecourse in July when ridden by Richard Kingscote. In that race, he had the role of pacesetter, but managed to keep the lead. In the BC Mile, Qirat is likely to be sent to the front early to avoid a wide trip in a big field. Starlust paid $69.20 in the 2024 BC Turf Sprint. Amiloc will not pay anything close to that if he prevails on Saturday. He is 10-1 on the morning line in a race led by Arc runner-up Minnie Hauk and Rebel’s Romance, who won the BC Turf in 2022 and 2024. Amiloc, though, is not one to readily dismiss, his rider said. “I was fortunate on Starlust,” Ryan said. “It was an incredible buzz. If Amiloc is up to do it, it would mean more. I’ve been on him from the get-go. He’s a horse with a lot of character. It would be special.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
