Breeders' Cup Friday picks: How to bet on a $100 budget

Barbara D. Livingston La Wally could get a better setup in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Millions of dollars will be awarded to winning breeders, owners, trainers, jockeys, and bettors throughout Breeders’ Cup weekend. We want some of that cash! Let’s focus on Breeders’ Cup Friday and see if we can make some money using a $100 budget.

Here's how I'll play my hundred on Friday at Del Mar.

I’ll start with the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Race 6). I’m interested in two horses that should both offer nice value, No. 10 CY FAIR and No. 12 LENNILU, so let's put them in the top spot of a trifecta and build the wager around them. If Cy Fair or Lennilu wins the race, we’ll then have those two, plus No. 5 OBLITERATION and No. 9 TRUE LOVE in the second spot, and a lot of options for who can finish third.

Race 6: Juvenile Turf Sprint
50-cent trifecta
10, 12 with 5, 9, 10, 12 with 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
Wager total $18

Next, I’ll play the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Race 7), where I like No. 9 LA WALLY. This filly has had some sneaky troubled trips recently and has been in races that did not set up well for her. She now gets a bigger field and one that looks to have more fillies with early speed. This race could play out nicely for La Wally.

Race 7: Juvenile Fillies
$20 to win on No. 9 LA WALLY
Wager total $20

In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Race 8), I’ll take a similar approach as we did in Race 6, building a trifecta around two non-favorites: No. 1 ULTIMATE LOVE and No. 9 TIME TO DREAM. If one of those two win, I want to have lots of prices in the second and third spots.

Race 8: Juvenile Fillies Turf
50-cent Trifecta
1, 9 with 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, 13 with 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, 13
Wager total $42

The final race for my bankroll is the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Race 10), where I want to focus on No. 12 HEY NAY NAY. He drew a very wide post, but I'm not sure it will impact him as much as it might a couple others. There is not much early speed in this race, and Hey Nay Nay could cross over from the outside and sit a nice trip just behind Outfielder.

Race 10: Juvenile Turf
$20 to win on No. 13 HEY NAY NAY
Wager total $20

Good luck playing the races this weekend! I’ll also tackle Saturday’s loaded Championship card with another article.
