Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf: Key contenders
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLELady Eli, by Divine Park
Last 3 Beyers: 102-101-100
- Made it back from laminitis and has run two very good races this year: second in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa off a 14-month layoff, and a win in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl.
- Should relish the firm footing at Santa Anita, and there appears to be ample early speed to allow her to settle and make a run.
- Her workout last Sunday at Belmont Park was deemed one of her best by both jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who was on her, and trainer Chad Brown.
- Brown has won three runnings of this race including the last two.
Seventh Heaven, by Galileo
Last 3 Beyers: NA-NA-NA
- A multiple Group 1 stakes winner this year, she defeated Found, defending Breeders’ Cup Turf winner, in the Yorkshire Oaks in August.
- Finished fifth in her most recent start, the British Champion Filly and Mare Stakes. Trainer Aidan O’Brien blamed soft course condition and a two-month layoff for the mediocre performance.
- Like Lady Eli, will benefit from a contested pace.
- Gets Lasix for the first time.
- O’Brien is winless with eight previous starters in this race.
Sea Calisi, by Youmzain
Last 3 Beyers: 98-95-96
- Has won two of four starts this year for trainer Chad Brown, including the Grade 1 Beverly D at Arlington on Aug. 13.
- She had two months between races when she finished third to Lady Eli in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl.
- Brown expects Sea Calisi to move forward off that effort, and the filly has been working with Lady Eli since that race.
Sentiero Italia, by Medaglia d’Oro
Last 3 Beyers: 100-100-95
- Ran a very good second to Lady Eli in the Flower Bowl while setting the pace, a style that is not her preferred way of running.
- Figures to be in a stalking position in this race.
- Biggest question is whether she’s most effective at 1 1/4 miles.
Al’s Gal, by English Channel
Last 3 Beyers: 97-94-95
- In career best form with victories in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine and Ladies Marathon at Kentucky Downs.
- Prior to that, she finished second in the Beverly D, showing a strong late kick.
- Gets the hot-riding Jose Ortiz, who replaces Florent Geroux, who is riding Sea Calisi.
Queen’s Trust, by Dansili
Last 3 Beyers: NA-NA-NA
- Has only one win from seven starts, but she’s been competitive with the likes of Seventh Heaven and Minding.
- Always have to respect trainer Michael Stoute, who has won six Breeders’ Cup races including this race twice.
