When handicapping the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, it usually pays to look yonder. Six of the last seven winners – including the last four – were based overseas, and Europe sends another strong contingent. They are led by four-time Group 1 winner Inspiral, an outstanding miler trained by John and Thady Gosden who will be trying 1 1/4 miles for the first time. Originally scheduled to compete last Saturday in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot, Inspiral was re-routed due to soft ground. While Inspiral goes longer, Warm Heart cuts back following two Group 1 wins at 1 1/2 miles. Her trainer, Aidan O’Brien, captured this race last year with Tuesday, another Galileo 3-year-old who utilized the Yorkshire Oaks and Prix Vermeille as preps. O’Brien skipped the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera, a race that Tuesday used as a final springboard to her Breeders’ Cup success, and seems confident that firm ground will help Warm Heart. Lumiere Rock finished third in the Prix de l’Opera. A solid campaigner for trainer Joseph O’Brien, Lumiere Rock excels at 1 1/4 miles and appears to be coming into her own. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2023: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division State Occasion, fifth in the Prix de l’Opera, might need a career-best effort to upset this group. Japan’s Win Marilyn won the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase last year, but hasn’t shown the same pop in 2023. If a foreign raider doesn’t win the Filly and Mare Turf, then it’s usually a horse conditioned by Chad Brown, who is the only North American-based trainer to win this race over the past 11 years. He’s done it four times, most recently with Sistercharlie in 2018. Brown pre-entered three, but Gina Romantica’s first preference is the Mile. In Italian, second in this race last year, brings speed and class, but there are questions about her ability at 1 1/4 miles. Beaten on the wire in her last two, In Italian has earned seven consecutive triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures. She breezed an easy half in 51.80 seconds around the dogs last Saturday at Keeneland. In Italian likes to be forward, unlike Brown’s McKulick, a stayer who likely will need pace help to succeed. McKulick won the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks last year at 10 furlongs, but her last three victories came going longer. She breezed in company with graded winner Fluffy Socks on Oct. 20 at Belmont Park. An interesting new face is 3-year-old Lindy. Second in the French 1000 Guineas, she’s raced twice in North American for trainer Brendan Walsh. Lindy showed tactical speed when winning an allowance Sept. 7 at Kentucky Downs. “She’s done everything right since she came over,” Walsh said. “I wasn’t surprised at all by the way she ran.” :: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages on sale now!
