PASADENA, Calif. – Arabian Knight drew post 12 in a field of 13 and was installed as the morning-line favorite by both track linemaker Jon White and Daily Racing Form’s Brad Free for Saturday’s $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. White made Arabian Knight the 3-1 favorite, while Free pegged the 3-year-old at 7-2. The Classic is the richest of 14 Breeders’ Cup races to be run Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita, which is hosting the event for the 11th time. Arabian Knight, a 3-year-old, will seek to give Baffert a fifth Breeders’ Cup Classic victory, the previous four all coming with 3-year-olds, including Bayern [2014] and Arrogate [2016] when the event was held at Santa Anita. Arabian Knight, is 3 for 4 in his career and is coming off a victory in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Sept. 2 at Del Mar. While post 12 might seem like a detriment, Arabian Knight, who will be ridden by Flavien Prat, has enough to speed to get himself in a good early position. Additionally, in 1993, Arcangues won the Classic from post 12 in a field of 13 at odds of 133-1, still the longest-priced winner in the history of the Breeders’ Cup, which this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2023: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Arabian Knight is one of five 3-year-olds in the Classic. That includes Arcangelo, the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes winner, who might have been made the favorite if not for a foot issue that has surfaced the last few days. Arcangelo did not train Sunday or Monday after developing “a little warmth” in a hind foot, trainer Jena Antonucci said Monday. At the post position draw, held at the Pasadena Civic Center, located just 2 1/2 miles from the Rose Bowl, Antonucci, tried to downplay the situation. “It seems like everyone’s quite stressed about him for us, so thank you everybody for you grave concern for us,” she said. “He had a warm hind foot, we pulled a shoe off. . . . We’ll be patient, always put the horse first and make sure he’s 100 percent.” Arcangelo drew the rail. Antonucci noted that Arcangelo won from that post previously, in the Grade 3 Peter Pan, the second of what has turned into a four-race win streak. White made Arcangelo the 7-2 second choice, Free has him the fourth choice at 6-1. Both White and Free have White Abarrio at 4-1. White Abarrio, who breaks from post 3, will try to give trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. his second Breeders’ Cup Classic victory. He won it in 2005 with Saint Liam. It was only in April that Dutrow returned from a 10-year suspension. :: Get Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team when you purchase a BC VIP Package!
