Battle of Midway will be able to claim a unique distinction were he to win the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile for the second year in a row on Nov. 3. He would not be the first two-time winner – think Goldencents – but rather he would be the first to win the race at a two different configurations. Battle of Midway, who won his career debut at six furlongs, has raced exclusively at one turn this year. He finished second to early Dirt Mile favorite Catalina Cruiser in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien on Aug. 25 at Del Mar and a month later was fifth by 2 1/2 lengths in the Grade 2 Kelso at Belmont in which he broke from the rail. The starts were his first since the 2017 Breeders’ Cup. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2018: See DRF’s top contenders “He’s run two pretty good races off a long layoff,” trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. “If we had a better post last time, we would have run better.” Following last year’s Breeders’ Cup, Battle of Midway was sent to stud. The direction he might take for the Breeders’ Cup has yet to be determined, co-owner and trainer Ron Moquett said. “Depending on how we do in the Phoenix, we would like to have our options open,” he said. “So, we’re looking at both races, leaning toward the Sprint. But we’re going to pay attention to both races.” :: Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Results, replays, charts, and more Nice Not Nice eyes Fayette Nice Not Nice, second in the Ack Ack at Churchill, has been nominated for the Fayette at Keeneland but still could run in the BC Dirt Mile, trainer Buff Bradley said. “I don’t think the Breeders’ Cup is what we’re looking at, but I would say it’s not out of the question,” he said. “We might go The Player route with him.” The Player parlayed a runner-up finish in the Ack Ack to a win in the Fayette.
