Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Concern dies in Oklahoma

Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and pensioned sire Concern has died in Oklahoma. The Broad Brush horse, a pensioner at the Oklahoma Equine Reproductive Center in Washington, Okla., was 24.

Concern, who raced as a homebred for Robert Meyerhoff and was trained by the late Richard Small, won 7 of 30 career starts, earning $3,079,350. His most successful season came in 1994, as he won the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby and proceeded to rack up Grade 1 placings in the Preakness Stakes, Haskell Invitational, Travers Stakes, and Super Derby. He concluded the year with a breakthrough win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs. Concern followed up the following season with another Grade 1 triumph in the Californian Stakes, and added the Grade 3 New Orleans Handicap. In all, he won or placed in 18 stakes events.

Concern entered stud in 1996 at Northview Stallion Station in his native Maryland, and moved to the Oklahoma Equine Reproductive Center in 2004. The stallion is represented by 158 winners, including 10 stakes winners, for career progeny earnings of more than $10.5 million. His top campaigners include two-time champion steeplechase horse Good Night Shirt.

Concern was pensioned from stud duty in 2011 and lived out his days in Oklahoma.
