Breeders' Cup Classic: Fort Larned has final breeze
Barbara D. Livingston Fort Larned enters Saturday's Grade 1 Whitney off a front-running 6 1/4-length victory in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap in June.
Fort Larned, seeking to defend his title in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at Santa Anita, worked five furlongs in 1:01.80 on Monday at Churchill Downs, his final prep for the race.
Brian Hernandez Jr., the regular rider for Fort Larned, was aboard. The horse worked by himself.
"Everything's good. It was a nice work," said Ian Wilkes, who trains Fort Larned. "He came back happy. He wanted to do more."
Fort Larned is scheduled to fly to California on Tuesday. He was among 12 horses expected to be entered Monday in the Classic. Post positions for the race are scheduled to be drawn at 4 p.m. Pacific on Monday. The draw can be seen live on HRTV.
