Breeders' Cup berth on the line in Grosser Preis von Baden
Goldstream, fourth in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park on Aug. 15, is part of a modest field in Sunday’s $278,000 Grosser Preis von Baden at Baden-Baden Racecourse in Germany, a race that will award the winner a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
The Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Baden is run at 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) on turf and part of the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In program.
Goldstream, a 3-year-old trained by Andreas Wohler, won the Group 1 Italian Derby in May. In the $450,000 Secretariat Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf, Goldstream was beaten 8 1/4 lengths by the Irish invader Highland Reel.
Wohler won the 2013 Grosser Preis Von Baden with Novellist.
Goldstream’s main rivals are the 4-year-old colts Ito and Prince Gibraltar. Ito was second in the Group 1 Gross Preis von Berlin on Aug. 9 and won a Group 2 race in Germany earlier this year. Ito is trained by Jean-Pierre Carvalho, who won the 2014 Grosser Preis Von Baden with Our Ivanhowe.
Prince Gibraltar was second in the Group 2 Grand Prix de Chantilly on May 31 and third in the Grade 2 York Stakes at York Racecourse in England on July 25.
