ARCADIA, Calif. - No one has earned more prize money in the history of the Breeders’ Cup than Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Few will have as powerful of a team as Baffert for the two days of Breeders’ Cup races at Del Mar on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. As of Sunday, Baffert had candidates for seven of the 14 races, including three possible runners for the Juvenile with Brant, Desert Gate, and Litmus Test, as well as Hope Road, Richi and Splendora in the Filly and Mare Sprint. Nysos and Citizen Bull are Baffert’s intended runners in the Dirt Mile, with Cavalieri and Seismic Beauty booked for the Distaff. Imagination is on schedule for the Sprint, Nevada Beach for the Classic, and Bottle of Rouge and Explora for the Juvenile Fillies. Baffert and Chad Brown have won 19 Breeders’ Cup races, one less than the late D. Wayne Lukas and Aidan O’Brien on the all-time list. Baffert’s runners have earned more than $42.3 million, well clear of O’Brien, who is second with more than $35.3 million. ON SALE NOW: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages! Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Explora, racing without blinkers for the first time, closed from third to win by 4 1/4 lengths in 1:44.13. The $200,500 Oak Leaf Stakes was Explora’s first start beyond seven furlongs. “You couldn’t ask for a better race,” Baffert said at his barn on Sunday morning. “She wanted two turns without a doubt.” Desert Gate, winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs on Sept. 7, remains on schedule for the BC Juvenile on Oct. 31 despite finishing second by three-quarters of a length to Intrepido in Saturday’s Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. Desert Gate set the pace and was caught late. “I think Desert Gate is better than that,” Baffert said. “He got tired and stopped at the end. I’m not going to give up on him. He’s still pointing to the Juvenile.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
