Breeders Crown: World record performance by Wrong Sounds Right in 2YO Colt Trot final
:quality(75))
Wrong Sounds Right overcame being parked for almost half a mile through a demanding tempo and just kept finding more once he did land on the the lead, winning Friday night's (October 23) Grade 1 $700,000 Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Colt Trot final at Eldorado Scioto Downs in a world record 1:51 3/5.
Driven by Todd McCarthy for trainer Jim Campbell and owner/breeder Runthetable Stables, Wrong Sounds Right floated away from post five, and with the best spot available somewhere in mid-pack, McCarthy elected to drive on two-wide as Presidente (Dexter Dunn) and Lifetime Dreamer (Yannick Gingras) were side-by-side at the quarter in a quick 26 4/5. Lifetime Dreamer made Wrong Sounds Right continue to work as they raced in front of the stands for the first time, and Wrong Sounds Right managed to take control finally just before the half of 54 3/5.
"It wasn't probably how I dreamed it going for me, but I didn't like where I was going to get away early, and I decided to press on," McCarthy said about his strategy. "I figured that there would be a little bit of speed, and I would have to pay a bit. He's just so classy, this horse. He can do it either way, and I've got so much faith in him."
Access Now (Bob McClure) loosely followed Wrong Sounds Right's move to the point and was left first-over when Wrong Sounds Right was able to slide down to the pylons. Access Now would then advance up to McCarthy's wheel at the 1:23 2/5 three-quarters as Whateverittakes As (Tony Hall) worked out a second-over trip and Jimdougie Armitage (Ake Svanstedt) sat third-over.
There just wasn't any catching Wrong Sounds Right around the last turn or through the stretch, though, as his 28 1/5 final quarter kept him clear from Access Now and gave McCarthy a chance to put his whip in the air in celebration. Access Now got the better of Lifetime Dreamer for second, followed by Whateverittakes As and Jimdougie Armitage.

The time of 1:51 3/5 bettered the previous standard for a freshman colt trotter on a five-eighths-mile track of 1:52 1/5 set by Father Patrick in his Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Colt Trot elimination at Pocono in 2013. It also matched the overall 2-year-old world record set by another Campbell trainee in filly Cooler Schooner at Pocono in August of 2013. This was the third Breeders Crown win for McCarthy, the seventh for Campbell and the second for Scott Farber's Runthetable Stable as both a breeder and an owner.
"Jim Campbell has done such a wonderful job with bringing this horse up and having him ready every time," remarked McCarthy. "He's had a wonderful season, and he's just a beautiful horse. It's pretty special."
Campbell, who lost longtime client Jules Siegel's Fashion Farms when Siegel retired from the business and dispersed after the 2025 racing season, certainly landed on his feet with Wrong Sounds Right.
"It just caps off a great year with this horse. He's been a blessing from God to have a horse of this caliber," Campbell said. "He's just a pleasure to be around. Aside from what from he's done on the racetrack, he's just a happy horse. He's a professional. Everything we've thrown at him, he handles it. He really showed tonight how tough he really is.
"He's the type of horse that never stops going. When he would train down, he would just trot through the wire, and there was no end to him. He showed that tonight. I'll be honest I was a little worried because he really didn't clear just until before the half. He really had a tough first-half, but he's a professional. He loves to race and he loves to win. It's a real pleasure dealing with Scott Farber with a horse of this caliber. Scott said a couple of months ago, 'we've got a nice horse, let's just have fun and enjoy it,' and that's what we're doing."
A Tactical Landing-Broadway Jo Ell colt, Wrong Sounds Right went through the 2025 Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, Penn., where Farber paid $35,000 to purchase the horse back. That's been a prudent investment, as Wrong Sounds Right now has a summary of 7-1-0 from nine starts and has earned $948,750.
"I'm really happy about that buy-back," Farber said with a laugh. "I've said to Jim repeatedly, 'could you imagine if we let this horse go at that price?' It's been great, and with a little bit of luck, and I'm not wishing anything on any other horse, I can tell you right now he's my Horse of the Year. I think he deserves some consideration for Horse of the Year overall. I know that's a bold statement. I've been making them all year long, and he's been backing me up all year long - world record after world record after world record, tying track records everywhere he goes. This horse is amazing.
"I just told Todd out on the track, when I saw 54 3/5 come up, I was ready to kill him, but this horse, he does what he does - he just grinds. He grinds and grinds and wears horses down. He's a tough horse to beat. He's got a lot of heart. It's a great group. They're wonderful people to work with. Obviously Jimmy and I go back 30 years, and Todd has just been great with any horse we've ever given him to work with. He just knows how to handle horses. He's got a way with my horses. I can only speak from experience with me. I've had a lot of success, and there's no arguing with success."
The 3-5 betting favorite, Wrong Sounds Right paid $3.20 to win.
