Breeders Crown: Supplement pays off for Call Me Goo in Open Mares Trot final

Trainer Ake Svanstedt has been making a habit of capturing the Breeders Crown Open Mares Trot, and on Saturday (Oct. 26) his good fortune continued as his two supplemental entries Call Me Goo and Nelsonbriteagle NO finished one-two in the $496,000 event at the Meadowlands, with Svanstedt guiding Call Me Goo to a stakes record 1:50 4/5 mile.

Action was hot and heavy at the start with Pioneer As and Tim Tetrick sweeping around trotters from post nine to gain control before the quarter. Svanstedt left with Call Me Goo and remained parked through the opening bend, making M-M's Dream and David Miller race three-wide for much of the opening bend. Past the 27 4/5 opening quarter, Call Me Goo took control of the race and never looked back, with Svanstedt not letting M-M's Dream pass at any point.

Call Me Goo was safely on top through a 55 second first-half, with a wind-aided 27 1/5 second quarter, and through three- quarters in 1:22 3/5, with M-M's Dream tiring and Nelsonbriteagle NO and Dexter Dunn marching three-deep with hope of closing the margin on her stablemate. That wouldn't be the case on this night as Call Me Goo, a daughter of Googoo Gaagaa from the Great George Two-sired dam Callmemza, had plenty in reserve and trotted her final quarter in 28 1/5 to maintain a 3 1/4 length margin to the finish. Nelsonbriteagle NO finished with solid trot to be a clear second after racing the entire mile on the rim. M-M's Dream had an even tougher trip and was quite game holding down the show spot. Warrawee Xenia and Tactical Mounds finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Owned by Graham Grace Stables and Ake Svanstedt Stables Inc., Call Me Goo was a winner for the 23rd time during her three-year racing career, with her Breeders Crown clocking a career mark as well. Bred in Maryland by Bib Roberts, Call Me Goo pushed her career bankroll to $936,518 with the victory.

Svanstedt's decision to supplement both mares had nothing to do with the retirement of Jiggy Jog S. "She was going to go with the boys," Svanstedt said in the post-race interview. "The owner has been talking about supplementing for the last few weeks, so we decided to go."

Call Me Goo's 1:50 4/5 mile lowered the stakes record of 1:51 set by Manchego in 2019. Trainer Ake Svanstedt won his third trophy in the Open Mares Trot after taking his first Breeders Crown in 2021 with Felicityshagwell S and taking last year's edition with Jiggy Jog S.

As a 5-1 choice, Call Me Goo returned $12 to win.
