Gem Quality delivered a 23-1 upset in the $700,000 Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Colt Pace on Friday night at Harrah's Hoosier Park, rallying in the stretch to win in a life's-best and track record 1:50. The complexion of the race was altered before the start as Newsroom (David Miller) made a break in post one and bothered trailer Noblesville (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.), causing a recall. After reforming, the went off without a hitch, and Gem Quality (Dexter Dunn) left quickly from post five and then yielded to a two-wide and hustling out from post nine Legendary Hanover (James MacDonald) past the 26 second opening quarter. Legendary Hanover continued to show the way in the backstretch, but approaching the 54 2/5 half, heavy favorite Captain Albano (Todd McCarthy) brushed out of third, and he would fire past Legendary Hanover before entering the final bend. Newsroom (David Miller) would move up first-over on the turn out of mid-pack, but he stalled out in a joint second coming to the 1:23 three-quarters and then went wide, giving plenty of room for Gem Quality and Dunn to tip out. Captain Albano got separation on the field in the upper part of the stretch, but Gem Quality began to rally to his outside, and Gem Quality went by Captain Albano inside the final eighth en route to the victory by a length and a quarter. Storm Shadow (Bob McClure) was the third-place finisher, followed by 132-1 shot Nuclear (Andy Miller) and 105-1 shot Noblesville. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter "It didn't affect him at all actually. He was really relaxed. He's a pretty intelligent horse. A few of them were getting pretty fired up and probably washed themselves out a touch, but my guy kept his calm and was good," Dunn said about the recall. "We had to use him a little off the gate and it was a pretty solid first quarter, but then we followed the two right horses. I was really happy where I was after that. Newsroom sort of run off and blew the turn. We got a good gap up through the middle and he exploded well." Chris Ryder trains Gem Quality, a colt by first-crop sire Captain Crunch, for co-owners/breeders Let It Ride Stables Inc. and Bottom Line Racing LLC. and co-owners Brad Grant and Enviro Stables Ltd. He has a record of 4-1-1 from eight starts, has earned $438,940 and paid $48.60 to win. "I know he's a longshot, and maybe that was justified, but the horse has always had good speed, a really good sprinter, even against good horses," remarked Ryder, who picked up his first Breeders Crown victory with a colt after all his prior Breeders Crown tallies were with fillies or mares. "Last week we had a hiccup and he kind of pulled himself coming down to the wire, but he didn't do that tonight. Gave him an easy week and I thought he was pretty fresh. It's not a surprise to me. "I'm thrilled. We thought twice about coming here, and we thought why not, and we pulled it off. You've got to be in it to win it. That's what makes racing such a terrific business; you never really know who is going to win."
