The Breeders Crown championships are set for Friday (Oct. 24) and Saturday (Oct. 25) at Woodbine Mohawk Park with a first race post time of 6:35 PM (EDT) each night. Four $700,000 finals for 2-year-olds are in the spotlight for the first night of action and eight Crown races worth nearly $5 million will be contested on Saturday. The featured Standardbred attraction on Friday competes in the last of four consecutive Crown races as Beau Jangles puts his perfect 11-for-11 record on the line in the ninth race rookie male pace. Beau Jangles is the 8-5 morning line favorite from post six with regular driver Bob McClure in the bike for trainer Dr. Ian Moore. Saturday’s card offers up a collection of harness racing stars including 2024 Horse of the Year Twin B Joe Fresh (race 3), the sport’s leading money-winner in 2025 Lexus Kody (race 7), and 3-year-old male pacing standout Louprint. The Saturday Breeders Crown races start in race two and will be contested consecutively through race nine. Both Friday and Saturday cards include $100,000 Guaranteed Pick 5 wagers starting in races one and six. Saturday adds a mandatory payout of the Jackpot Hi-5 in the twelfth and final race. Our Breeders Crown Headquarters includes links to FREE HARNESS EYE PAST PERFORMANCES for both cards as well as full-card analysis and a pair of handicapping videos where I’m joined by Jay Bergman and Matt Rose. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24 Race 6: $700K 2YO Filly Trot There is no way to sugarcoat the dull performance that (3) SOUTHWIND CHASKA tossed in last week. It happened and I’m going to turn the page because everything we’ve seen prior to that has been exemplary, including wins over two different bigger tracks. She can rebound here at a price. (5) STORYBOOK LOVE was very sharp winning her elimination and when you stack her up against the likely chalk (#2 Nezuko Kamado S), she stacks up nicely. (9) SETYOURSIGHTSHIGH is another that could provide some value in the sequence. She had a bit of an adventurous trip in the elimination round and notice she’s never been worse than second in her career. Race 7: $700K 2YO Filly Pace (3) LOUA DIPA is far and away the best filly in this race and perhaps the best 2-year-old in the sport. She’s won her last three stakes races by a combined 16 1/4 lengths. We’ll be singling her like everyone else because there is no other sensible path. Race 8: $700K 2YO Colt Trot There are probably five legitimate contenders on paper and we’ll use three. (2) SPENCER HANOVER has become a new horse with trotting hobbles added and you had to walk away impressed with his 26 3/5 stretch kick to win going away in the elimination round. The best part is he may be the third choice tonight in the wagering. (1) APEX is clearly the horse to beat following four straight stakes wins. He’s not necessarily flashy but he certainly gets the job done. (4) NIX NACKEN could arguably be a step below the top pair depending on how you view his résumé, but he really hasn’t done much wrong in his last four starts and he could be the one flying late if the outside speed is determined to make the front. Race 9: $700K 2YO Colt Pace Most people will see the undefeated (6) Beau Jangles, put a checkmark next to his name and move on. After spending more time on this race than any other, I don’t see it that way. If placed on the lead, Beau Jangles is going to have to deal with speeds he’s never seen before and find more. He may do that but it’s too risky for me with a potential 3-5 price tag. (2) BRANDON BLVD is the most proven horse at sitting off a hot pace and winning. The thought of him at 5-2 is very appealing. Also on my ticket will be (5) FRANTIC HANOVER, who was a bit dull in the elimination round but previously had done nearly everything right, (4) AL PAPI, a colt that has proven he can go a 1:21 three-quarters and fight through the wire, and finally (1) SHOW ME YOUR ACE, who is going to be a huge price and can kick home in 25 and change with the right setup. Race 10: Open F&M Pace (8) SEACLUSION N raced very well from post 10 considering it was her first start since coming in from New Zealand. Notice she has dropped more than two seconds in each trip to the track since her arrival. (6) SO MUCH MORE was used in the pace last time and wound up trapped with nowhere to go in the stretch after a shuffle. She’s not the mare she once was but she is good enough to play with these. (1) TALK CURDY TO ME got a good pace setup and rallied for second last time. Five-year-old just needs a clean trip. (7) GRIT N GRACE reunites with Jamieson and could return to form. .20 Ticket: 3,5,9 / 3 / 1,2,4,5 / 4,5,9 / 1,6,7,8 = $28.80 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25 Race 6: $600K Breeders Crown 3YO Colt Trot (3) MARYLAND was stuck in the second tier, ended up third over and simply had too far to come despite a 26 3/5 final quarter last time. Here he is perfectly drawn with plenty of early speed to his outside and a potentially perfect escort in stablemate Super Chapter to provide live cover. (4) EMOTICON LEGACY is the deserving favorite and a horse that simply can’t be left off your Pick 5 tickets; he’s too sharp and should be just high enough on the toteboard to use. I’m still not convinced that (10) GO DOG GO isn’t the most talented horse in the field and from an inside post he would’ve been my top pick. Winning from the outside will be a tall task but maybe the addition of Lasix will help. Race 7: $600K Breeders Crown Open Trot (5) LEXUS KODY is riding a five race winning streak and it doesn’t even seem to matter what trip he gets. With Yannick Gingras in the bike, they’ve won on the lead, first over and last-to-first. It is very difficult to find a legitimate reason why he won’t win yet again. Race 8: $600K Breeders Crown 3YO Colt Pace Some people will look at the mile from (1) MADDEN OAKS last week and feel it was a subpar effort, but how much can they really expect from the horse? He came the final half in an insane 51 4/5 and battled through the stretch even after coming first over. He’s a real contender at very nice odds. While (8) LOUPRINT is without a doubt the best horse in the race, he has been dealt an interesting hand with a ton of early speed to his inside. Wrenn is going to earn his money in the bike. The price won’t be great but I do think he can overcome a bad trip. Race 9: $600K Breeders Crown Open Pace (7) MAXIMUS MIKI failed on the engine last time but it was more because of strategy in my opinion than the horse not being good enough. Tonight the trip projects to be different and he’ll certainly be pacing at top speed sooner than the stretch. (5) ERVIN HANOVER is in crazy-good form and while his price won’t be great, he is impossible to leave off your tickets because a bad trip doesn’t bother him. (3) CAPTAIN ALBANO was used early and couldn’t get room until too late in his elimination. I see him floating away this week, letting the outside speed settle and then trying to race on the front. (8) NIJINSKY has come back from summer break in super form and my only concern is trip from the outside post. Race 10: $75K Free For All Pace (3) FUNTIME BAYAMA has been a tease most of the year, racing from behind and getting smaller checks. I’ve given up on him showing speed but this does seem to be a spot where there is enough pace to his outside and enough quality to his inside to set him up with a sweet trip. (7) REDWOOD HANOVER seems likely to be overlooked in the wagering but has been super since coming east for Engblom. (4) RUTHGLESS HANOVER was never put in play in the Breeders Crown and now we get a new driver tonight. Has he lost a bit off his fastball or can he speed pop this field? (2) BYTHEMISSAL has way too much of my money. Obviously he can win if he brings anything close to his best game. .20 Ticket: 3,4,10 / 5 / 1,8 / 3,5,7,8 / 2,3,4,7 = $19.20
