Breeders Crown: 13 eliminations drawn; 5 races straight to finals

After 156 horses dropped in the box for the Breeders Crown eliminations at the Meadowlands on Friday and Saturday (11/14 & 15), the stage is now set for 13 eliminations races over the weekend to weed the contenders from the pretenders.
Of the 12 finals to be contested on the November 21/22 cards at the Meadowlands, seven divisions will require eliminations. Those include two eliminations each for 2-year-old pacers and trotters of both sexes, two eliminations for 3-year-old colt and filly pacers, and one elim in the Open Trot.

Rookie fillies on both gaits and second-year filly pacers will compete in Friday eliminations. The top ranked horse in the sport—JK She’salady—heads a group of 15 freshman pacing fillies. The Nancy Johansson trainee will start in the first elimination from post five with new driver Tim Tetrick in the bike. Former pilot Yannick Gingras will steer the highly-touted Sassa Hanover from post seven in the same split.

Another group of 15 will do battle in two 3-year-old filly pacing eliminations. Leading money-winner amongst her peers, Color’s A Virgin will try to lock up the division with a pair of wins in consecutive weeks. She starts from post two in race four. Trace Tetrick will drive for trainer Brian Brown.

Two fields of nine will be reduced to 10 finalists in the 2-year-old colt trot splits. Habitat, who leads the division with $491,907 in earnings, heads the group from post 6 in the first elimination. Yannick Gingras was listed to drive the Ron Burke-conditioned horse along with the Jimmy Takter-trained Pinkman, who has won four of six lifetime races and figures prominently.

Three-year-old colt pacers will square off in two eight-horse eliminations with major implications for year-end honors. With the exceptions of McWicked, all of the leading players are stuffed into one race. “Now” horse Always B Miki starts from post four but will have no easy task defeating JK Endofanera (post 1), Somewhere In L A (post 3), Luck Be Withyou (post 5), and Meadowlands Pace champ He’s Watching (post 6).

Ten trotters will vie for six open spots in the Crown Trot. Maven, the recent $750,000 purchase at the Harrisburg Sale last week by Mel Hartman, will debut for the Jimmy Takter barn. The lone mare in the group will have to overcome post 10. The six-pack that advances will meet up with Commander Crowe, Market Share, Intimidate, and Creatine next Saturday.
