Breeder Campbell floods the Lansing Stakes field
Lisa Campbell can’t lose on Saturday in the $20,000 Lansing Stakes.
The Grass Lake, Mich., resident owns probable favorite Couldnt Wait, but more importantly, Campbell is the breeder of record for all five horses in the six-furlong race for Michigan-bred, 3-year-old colts and geldings at Hazel Park.
Campbell’s homebred Couldnt Wait has never finished worse than second in four career starts, most recently winning a six-furlong allowance at Thistledown by 2 1/2 lengths June 18, which followed a four-length maiden score at 5 1/2 furlongs at the same track June 1.
Couldnt Wait has raced once at Hazel Park, debuting with a runner-up effort in last year’s Michigan Sire Stakes. Regular rider T.D. Houghton will again have the mount aboard the War Image gelding on Saturday.
Couldnt Wait is one of three horses in the Lansing field trained by Ronald Allen Sr., who will also saddle Run Dan Run and Syncline’s Trip.
Run Dan Run makes his Hazel Park debut in the Lansing after beginning his career with six starts at Mahoning Valley Race Course. The Equality gelding comes into the race fresh from a three-month layoff, last finishing fourth in a six-furlong maiden special weight April 16.
He most recently turned in a bullet work for five furlongs in 1:02:20 June 26 at Thistledown. Angel Stanley picks up the mount aboard Run Dan Run.
Also entered is Kiki Quality, who won on debut in a four-furlong maiden claiming race at Hazel Park on June 3 by a front-running 5 1/4 lengths. Glenmore Mayhew will ride the Equality colt for owner and trainer Mike Hortsman.
