OCEANPORT, N.J. – Jockey Samy Camacho received a surprise phone call early Saturday morning and then pulled off an afternoon upset when he piloted Breakthrough to a gate-to-wire victory in the $100,000 Wolf Hill Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 5 1/2 furlongs over a firm Monmouth turf course. Substituting for the absent Inoel Beato, Camacho hustled Breakthrough to the front and the inner rail while pressured from the outside by Admiral Abe. Breakthrough seemed comfortable after stepping the opening quarter in 21.74 seconds and had something in reserve when Admiral Abe and Belgrano challenged in upper stretch. Belgrano, winner of the Select Stakes over the course and distance on June 19, loomed boldly in the final sixteenth, but Breakthrough refused to yield. The 4-year-old gelding streaked under the wire a half-length better than Belgrano. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Admiral Abe in third. Then came Proven Strategies, favored The Critical Way, Montauk Daddy, and Constant Knight. Big Package scratched. Breakthrough completed the distance in 1:00.99 and returned $34.80 as the fifth choice in the betting.  :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! Join DRF Bets. "Another rider was supposed to ride that horse and the trainer called me in the morning and asked me to ride," Camacho said in the winner's circle after the Wolf Hill. "I broke on top and everyone let me go so easy," Camacho continued. "At the three-eighths pole, I felt like I got it." Camacho praised Breakthrough's determination and noted the sunbaked turf course was "very firm" and "good for speed horses." The Critical Way, last year's Wolf Hill winner and one of the expected pacesetters, failed to show his usual zip. “I knew I had to be 1-2 [early], but when I saw that The Critical Way didn't break faster than my horse, I felt I was going to beat him," Camacho said. Breakthrough was claimed for $25,000 by trainer Juan Avila and RT Racing Stable out of a maiden victory at Gulfstream on March 10, 2021. The Wolf Hill was his first stakes score. He prepped for the race with a front-running win in a first-level allowance July 4 at Monmouth.  Bred in Kentucky by Highclere Inc. and Springtown Show Stables, the son of Nyquist sold for $330,000 as a Fasig-Tipton July yearling. He is a half-brother to stakes winner Red Vine, who placed in four Grade 1 dirt races including a third in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Breakthrough has now won 4 of 17 starts for lifetime earnings of $181,000.
