Breakin the Fever ran his rivals off their feet in the $50,000 Ontario County Stakes at Finger Lakes on Friday, giving trainer Debra Breed her first career stakes win.
Breakin the Fever moved up inside 28-1 longshot Fallfire to take the early lead, opened a long advantage before reaching the far turn in the six-furlong race for New York-bred 3-year-olds, and then was geared down in the final sixteenth by jockey Oscar Gomez to win by 7 1/4 lengths.
Breed is also the owner and breeder of Breakin the Fever, who is now 7 for 15 in his career with earnings of $217,321.
“He is a homebred that we loved from the very beginning,” Breed said. “We are excited he is doing so well.”
Breakin the Fever, a gelded son of Roaring Fever, set fractions of 21.85 seconds, 44.16, and 56.39 en route to a final time of 1:09.76. According to track officials, Breakin the Fever’s time is the fastest for the distance at Finger Lakes this season.
Breakin the Fever, who was 8-5 as he entered the gate, dropped markedly in the closing seconds and paid $2.90.
