OPELOUSAS, La. - Jockey Gerard Melancon swept the weekend's two stakes at Evangeline Downs after staging a furious late rally with Break Up in Saturday night's $50,000 Acclaim Stakes. On Friday, Melancon also turned in a late run on board Seven Seventythree to capture the $50,000 Salute Stakes for 3-year-old Louisiana-bred fillies. Silent Pipe, who set all the pace in the Acclaim, narrowly failed to hang on, finishing only a nose behind Break Up with Milwaukee Miracle another 2 1/4 lengths back in third. The final time for the seven furlongs over a fast track was 1:23.90. The winner is trained by Brett Brinkman and won for the third time in his 10-race career that includes a victory in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes at Fair Grounds last December. The Sunday Break colt has now earned more than $156,000.
