Grade 1 winner Brant, who finished fourth in Sunday’s Maxfield Stakes at Churchill Downs, came out of the race with some minor bone bruising and will be turned out for 60 days, trainer Bob Baffert said Monday.
“That was not him yesterday, that was not the Brant we expected to see,” Baffert said. “We’re going to kick him out for a little bit and hopefully have him back for the Breeders’ Cup in the fall.”
Brant, a son of Gun Runner who brought $3 million at the OBS March 2-year-old-in-training sale in 2025, won his first two starts, including the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. He finished his 2-year-old season with a third-place finish behind Ted Noffey in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
In his one other start as a 3-year-old, Brant finished fifth in the San Felipe.
In other news regarding Baffert runners, Crude Velocity, second to Englishman in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens on June 6, worked a half-mile in 48.40 seconds as he continues preparations for the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth Park on July 18. Splendora, the Shawnee Stakes winner who scratched from Saturday’s Fleur de Lis at Churchill, worked a half-mile in 49.60. Splendora will be pointed to the Grade 2, $500,000 Molly Pitcher at Monmouth on the same card, Baffert said.
